  • I Had To Do It And It's Coming!

New Les Paul Custom '68 Reissue Figured Top in Triburst finish. It was between a new RR1 and this I feel bad because this is the JCF forum, but these are getting harder to find since they are "Limited" now in production. It has a '59 neck profile and the 6150 style frets. More pics and test ride report when I get it.

Put an rsguitarworks pot kit in there and you will have a paul worth playing not just to look at.Very nice score.
        Really? well screw Mark Twain.

Straycat, I knew you would be along to put a plug in for RS

I'm planning on that pot kit!

It was a toss up with the Heritage Cherry finish, but one of my old time buddies pointed out the dark edges of the Triburst really set the look. It also looks more "old school" Gibson than the Cherry Burst.

I've tried out 3 of those '68 RI in that color and all three sounded and played GREAT. You have a winner! I have a Les Paul Supreme myself... what's the RS pot kit do exactly?

On the pot kit, I have no experience with personally. Maybe Straycat can share his experience. From the specs, I'd say the components are higher grade CTS pots that have better internals and the Caps are custom made to perform like the old style Bumble Bees. It makes sense to me. On some of my vintage Fender guitars, I installed some caps custom made for Angela Instruments http://www.angela.com/. Steve is an old time tube and HAM radio nut and has created some neat electonics. The caps I installed were a definite improvement over the tone response band including the audio taper, that were the stock components. If you play with your controls "pinned" all the time, these mods would be a waste of time and money IMHO. But, if you like to change the knob positions for different types of music I would go this route.
As soon as I get the RS kit installed, I'll post a review.

Interesting enough the Seller has sold 10 out of 12 of these and said this one was in the top 2 of all of them. But, he may just tell that to everyone. LOL!

If you have 300K pots, going to a higher value (500K or higher) will brighten up the higher end and squeeze out a little more output. Sometimes this is good, sometimes it's not. I like my 1977 LP Custom just like it is with no mods. I put in some 550K CTS pots in my R0 along with some real NOS bumble bee caps I got on ebay, and did the same in my LP Classic Premium Plus (well a lot more than that). The thing with going to a higher value pot is that if it's too bright, just turn it own. You can't take a lower pot and turn it up unless you are the dude from Spinal Tap.

I got my pots from Black Rose Customs. No issues.

But the bottom line is, if you like the way it sounds, don't F with it just because everyone else says to. Do it for a good reason, like say if your guitar sounds muddy.

I don't have muddy issues with my '77, so I'm not changing it.
I wanted more top end and output in my R0, and I also wired it exactly like a 50's LP with 50's wiring (go to lespaulforum.com for more info).
My Classic is a metal LP with 496R/500T, so it made sense to do it in that, and I wanted push/pull pots (you can only get CTS large push pull pots from Black Rose last I checked) to split the coils.
