  • Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor?

Anyone have any reliable info on this model? Which ones to avoid, etc etc?

No info on these, but heard they were nice, as well as the Byrdland model. Not quite as responsive as the Gibson as far as tone woods, but a real deal for the money.

So $330 shipped for one with no structural issues would be a bargain?

I would think so In comparison, the Gibson version would be over $5K minimum. I've read reviews on the Epi Joe Pass and Byrdland instruments and they were not that far off from the originals. By the way, I got to spend some time with Joe Pass back in the 90's. Super amazing player he was.

I had one for a long time, and really liked it. Pickups were a little dead, but none of us ever sticks with stock pickups anyway. It was a very comfortable player with great action.

Thanks. I went ahead and hit this one. Looks like all it has is a finish ding. Hopefully the guy's legit.

Sounds like a deal. A little cleanup, setup and maybe a pickup change and it should be good to go. At $600, the going price new, I'd say this is a deal if he's honest. From his write up, it appears he was looking for more of a collectors piece than a player of a guitar. Best of Luck!

I have one almost exactly like that, I believe it's from 1994-ish. I bought it January of this year for about the price on that auction. It's a pretty decent guitar, sounds nice with flatwounds.. there is something in it that buzzes some times if you hit a resonant frequency or something, and I can't quite figure out what it is... that's my only complaint really.

Thanks. Hopefully I can track down the buzz if it's too annoying

I have one of those, I put GFS Nashville's in it and now it's my Brian Setzer rockabilly guitar. For the price it's a steal, no doubt!

I had a washburn J6 - Basically the same guitar made in Korea.
I liked it. Second the pickups issue. They werent bad, just not incredible. For $330, that's a lot of guitar. I think the Epiphone is not quite as tacky as the Washburn (headstock shape, tailpiece).
Fit and finish was very good, wood was nice. really solid.

In my opinion, the guitar was too thick/deep, but that goes with the territoryfor this type of guitar.

                            Thanks.
Any tips on flatwound strings? Or should I stick with roundwound?

I've got flats on my 175, so I've always kept round 10's on my Epi. It totally depends on what you're going to do with her, though. I would keep away from flats unless you're going to play straight up jazz on her. For a bit of mix of jazz and rock I'd go with rounds all the way. Flats are awesome, so easy to play single note runs on it's ridiculous, but they are so less bright sounding than rounds it's silly.
