For what it is worth I think he should be criticized for abandoning his people. It is probably true that the luthiers can go get positions elsewhere based on the work they have done with TA but they will almost certainly have to move and it is by no means a sure thing. Luthier jobs are few and far between. He could have come up with another arrangement that let him play with toys all day that didn't hang all his employees out to dry.

Selfishly I am cursing Tom for his decision. Tom's guitars are hands down in the top three of the guitar world.
For himself I am happy he is doing what he wants to do. He does not have to do anything for ANYONE, but himself. Can't trust anyone, family or friends. They will turn on you in a New York minute in regards to money, etc. Nobody knows what the hell he goes through day in and out. people coming to him and asking for more money, benefits, whatever. and then dealing with all business apsects. It can daunting.

Let him be happy, fuck everyone. Let those talented people fend for themselves, if they are that good they will land on their feet. The cream ultimately rises to the top. Tom be happy.

Ha ha your killing me, the guy from CA calling a masshole a socialist. Anyway, I mostly agree, legally TA should be beholden to none of his employees. However, if I had a bunch of families depending on me as boss of a company I wouldn't just pull the plug because I suddenly wanted to play in the sandbox all by myself. Maybe the shop was trying to unionize. I could see killing the whole thing if that were the case.

I think that is the root of the problem. I'm guessing he takes great pride in his name and its reputation for quality instruments. He could have grown to a point where things were more manageable by selling, farming out, or whatever, but at the same time with that growth he probably wouldn't be able to keep an eye on things as closely and he may have feared that would have an effect on quality to some degree and possibly tarnish his name/reputation in the process. As I said above, I think he was stuck in between growth stages and to take it to the next level was going to present issues that he wasn't comfortable with.

I spoke to Andy. That was the only used one they had.

I've been staying away from the two screws because one of them for sale on EBAY recently showed a crack in the wood.

I'll let others test this newfangled bolt on system before I take the plunge. I almot jumped on an ocean blue quilt over basswood a few weeks ago, so I was glad to see the koa still hanging around. The koa is supposed to give more of an edge to the basswood, make it more trebly than maple, which is just what I need in a semi-hollow.

Not sure if an old 4-bolt would have had any better luck. It got UPS'ed during delivery. Rosewood neck too.....what a shame.


I called the UPS insurance adjuster that came out to my house to look at it....and asked her what happens to the smashed packages that they accumulate. (What she told me..) is they are sold - sight unseen and packed in a huge truck - then the buyer puts them on eBay and splits the cash with UPS. Sure enough...about 10 or 12 days later it appears on eBay from someone in Canada:

I have mixed emotions about the situation at TAGW. I relaly like those guys - incredibly built guitars and excellent + customer service (Tom's called me at home....and I'm a nobody... Also not sure how the value of their guitars will be impacted. I believe they have produced 12,000 to date. I wish them well.

The voice of reason The strength of that joint has NOTHING to do with the shiping damages. I'm holding out for something new from them. I've owned 5 Andersons and the Cobra I still have is the best guitar I've ever owned out of about 50 or so....
