like i said earlier, the les paul classic with the 60's slim taper neck, great guitar and can still be had cheap, you can get them under $1100 sometimes, average about $1200 to $1300 Used.

I know some people cant stand the green inlays, well here is a little trick, get a UV light and leave it on, it fades the inlays to a light grey that is alot better then the green in my opinion.

I would disagree with you as I have had one for about a decade and had no problems with it I didn't cause by my own stupidity. No tone problems either. And let's be logical guys of course the Les Paul is gonna have meatier sound it is this simple: Flat top Super Strat =/= archtop LP (or any other archtop when it comes to tone). Not to mention with a LP there is more wood to resonate and improve sustain. Also look at the construction: Bolt-On compare to Set neck.

Not that there really is an appropriate place to suck a donkey. just clearifying cus i know how you guys are.
Well, I actually prefer Epiphones over "real" Gibsons, the overall quality of those is top notch and are incredible bang for the bucks.

And yes, of course everyone knows that Les Pauls sound really good (despite the fact that they are overpriced, too heavy, and nearly always out of tune). :ROTF:

Tone is the most important thing after all. You go to a studio and have to play massive rhythm tracks. NO OTHER guitar sounds like a good LP. You want to sacrifice a good fat tone because it's uncomfortable to play with LP? Or you want the thickest lead tone ever, LP delivers it, some superstrat with wizard neck does not.

I played some years ago. I thought the neck was great but I agree - upper fret access is crappy compared to 24 fret super strats - especially if you use the upper frets for arpeggios where you really need good access.

Tonewise they get great heavy tone. But the thing about mahogany guitars is that they don't stick out in the mix compared to an Alder, Ash or Poplar, etc...
Especially when soloing - they get lost many times. Y & T uses Les Pauls and I saw them live this summer. When it comes to lead work I can get much better tones out of super strat guitars with maple necks.
I use to think Jimmy Page's lead work always sounded thin when he used the Les Pauls.

to bad theres like a 10 pound wieght defrence which is where all your tone is at
"slappy, slappy" bill sings, happily, as he dick slaps random people on the streets of Cleveland.

Overpriced? Yeah, who wants to pay $1000 or more for a USA made guitar. That's totally absurd.

Out of Tune? Perhaps you need to learn how to use one of these: http://www.bossus.com/index.asp?pg=1&tmp=60

I find it funny that some people cut up Les Pauls because of the thick neck, heavy weight, or whatever. You have to remember that Les Pauls have been in production for half a century. There are hundreds of thousands of them in existence, and in the fifty years they have been made, Gibson has gone through a lot of ups and downs. quality control, and consistency wasn't always very good. There are lot's of stinkers out there, and not always the older ones. I've played many new LPs that sucked in various ways, but tone was not one of them. I've also played LPs that are light, have fast, slim necks, and are just all around kick-ass guitars.

I won't give Gibson all the credit though. They did it first, but there are tons of LP copies/variations out there that have that tone. You can't beat a nice slab of mahogany with a maple top.

Yeah Tim, I deserved that spanking I suppose. I play in a band with CliffClaven (Dave) so I wasn't really being serious, I just like giving him shit because he's such a Les Paul fanboy.

Damn, you Les Paul lovers sure are a sensitive bunch....considering what big strong men I'm sure you must be in order to play those monsters.

Nah, you'll just have to get used to the weight. After a few rehearsals you'd be fine. Also, Randy used to play the LP a lot - a he was a really tiny guy.
