I know mine is only a Squire, but I dig it.
Someday I'll get a USA, but it will have to be a Fat Strat.

I'm glad you started this thread. I have been in search of a Fender Strat. I know there are a million of them out there but here are the issues. I've only played Floyd Rose trems so vintage trems scare me for staying in tune and my style of play. I'm really not a fan of the large 70's headstock. I know I will probably have to get one with Fenders version of an updated trem which is fine.

The other thing is, they all look the same to me. I don't care if you are talking about a $399 Mexican version or a $5500 Custom Shop. To me a sunburst strat looks like a sunburst strat regardless of it's origin or materials.

So, which one do I go for? I'm thinking an American Deluxe HSS. But then there is that freakin roller nut. Damn I'm a pain in the ass. Input is appreciated.

Mine is a Squier too but one from almost 18 years old with a neck that's 22 years old.

My 1989 body - 1985 neck strat "The veteran"

I just keep coming back to it.

They may all look the same, but each has its own personality.
Play a bunch and pick one. If the lack of a Floyd bothers you, you can always add one after the fact. Not real hard to do.

Mine cost me $150 and plays and feels better than most Mexi-strats that are 3x the cost.

I've always wanted a Fender, but never found one that really seemed to fit right.

But I've recently come across a new one that's ringing my bells.

tobacco sunburst, rosewood board, gold hardware, 12" radius, medium jumbo frets. It's MIM and plays nicer than any of the US models in the shop. Not that it's necessarily a better guitar than the high ticket models, but it is a better fit for me. Almost like it was specced out with me in mind (or anyone else who prefers Super Strats, I guess)

I'm currently trying to convince myself that I don't need it.

Those of you that are looking to buy one, consider buying a MIM over the Americans. I don't know why they are doing the rounded radius with high frets on the Americans. It just promotoes bad tone and fretting out. I've checked out the MIMs, the new ones especially, and they have the low vintage frets (not wide, but the way a Strat should be) and a flatter radius. Try to set the action low on an American and you have a sucky guitar. Not so on the Mexicans. The electronics on the Mexs have been uprgraded recently as well. Not quite to the American standard, but very playable.
