I'm thinking about a variaxe but have read about pup problems after only a few months. Have any of you experienced this?
Any other variaxe comments by actual users would be greatly appreciated........thanks in advance...cb

I had two 500's, one 700, and one 600. The 300's are crap guitars. Only get one of those if you plan on transplanting it into a Warmoth body.

The 700 and 600 are decent enough. The 700 is clearly better made but the 600 is certainly adequate. You can always change the neck if you want.

The build quality of the 600 is on par with most other Korean guitars in the $400-500 range. And the 700 is on par with most other $600-750 Japanese guitars.

Soundwise Variax's are very good. Of course it's not the same as having a real 50's Les Paul or Strat or Tele etc. So what. There is a certain piezo quality to the sound that is always kind of there - it's not a show stopper but it's there if you're being picky.

The alternate tuning stuff and 12-strings sound like crap to me unless you bury them in some effects or distortion.

Thanks guys, I have a 74 strat,78 deluxe and 2000 SL2H.I thought it would be great to have access to some of these other tones. I especially like the idea of being able to change between acoustic and electric on the fly.

I would have preferred to have more recent pickup models and a more generalized body wood modelling system rather than "Vintage" this or that. They sounded good, but I'd personally prefer to customize my own combinations of wood and pickup type. The whole vintage thing doesn't impress me.
