No, I was referring to the non-rounded body. They will do that. Actually, there's an upcharge for rounded body, so you save money this way...

They wont do the Jackson style headstock at all anymore. But they do have a pointy-ish headstock that you can get in reverse. Have to ask for it though.

$700 is a lo of money, but on the other hand, I just can't refer to a custom made high-quality guitar that costs $700 too much. In fact, I sometimes wonder how Carvin does it.

I am seriously considering buying a Bolt kit and build it myself, since you save even more money that way.

I've got a DC 200. All I did was swap out the pickups for Dimarzios and yank out the active circuit. It's the best playing guitar I own, bar none!

I ordered a V220. Should have it by the summer.

In terms of playability and feel of the neck... how does a Carvin Bolt compare to a USA Jackson?

I am seriously considering buying a Bolt kit and build it myself, since you save even more money that way.

Is the kit neck finished? That's the first question I'd ask, because when you order a custom guitar with them, one of the options is a tung oil finish. That makes the neck incredibly fast and smooth. I'd say the neck is in the range of a Charvel bolt-on. Not too thin, but not chunky like a Fender.

Kit necks are not finished, but it's easy to apply tung oil.

My impression of Carvin necks is they're a bit wider than Jackson necks but about as thin. You don't get a compound radius, though, so the neck is 12" (standard) from nut to heel. It took me awhile to get used to it, after playing 9-1/2" Fender radii and compound 10 - 14" Jackson radii, but now they feel pretty natural.

Oh, and a couple things about the kits -- they have a bolt plus kit they don't advertise and, of course, the standard bolt kit. I thought mine would feel like a cheapy since I had to put it together myself, but it's got the fit of a USA quality guitar. Straight out of the box, I oiled it up and then put it together rather quickly (I don't really care about the finish). The guitar required no truss rod adjustment, no intonation adjustment, and no saddle adjustment. I want to tweak these but see no reason to. There's no fret buzz, the action is low, the frets are perfect, the ebony board feels great, the guitar stays in tune (I have the FT6 fixed bridge) rather well (not like a Floyd but still pretty good considering it has a traditional nut), etc. For less than $500.00, it is probably the best bargain on the market. And if you're a painter, you can get the bolt plus kit with a Floyd if you want and create an awesome graphic guitar for about the same price. And from what I understand, all of the options available on their production guitars (such as maple neck, wood choice, fret size, pickup choice, etc.) are available on kits, so I'm surprised their aren't more Carvin super strats out there with custom paint jobs by do-it-your-self-ers.

Here's my '02 SC90. It's shown with the Carvin C22T and C22N pickups, but now it's got a set of double creme DiMarzios... Super Distortion and Super 2, another volume and tone in place of the coil tap switches. It's also now got a DiMarzio "Petrucci" switch so I've got the inner coils of the humbuckers on in the middle position, plus I can choose to have one or the other inner coil on by itself for single coil mode when rolling back one of the volume controls.


I also had a DC400 and a 12-string DC120. Carvins rock!!!
