I've owned several Carvins, the only one I really liked was a Holdsworth. You'd be nuts to buy one new unless you plan on keeping it forever, since resale tends to be shit on Carvins.

So, Pete...what's out there that's comparably priced to a Carvin that offers the same features? I shot some e-mails off to a few guys that seemed in the same ballpark, but they weren't really good about replying.

Depending on what options you want, the answer could very well be nothing. What are you looking for?

My main requirements were a strat-style body with a real Floyd, and I also wanted to experiment with body wood and finishes. Also, I wanted a very flat radius...no less than 14 inches. My favorite that I tried was the Ibanez S Prestige (the ZR trem was awesome!), but the lack of fretboard inlays was a deal breaker. And I wanted to keep the price reasonable. That drove me to Carvin. GMW could've been cool, too. But the prices and turnaround times were both higher.

Like I said earlier, Carvin is a good idea *if* you're going to keep it. Resale for Carvin is absolutely abysmal... especially if you custom order something that doesn't have mass appeal. GMW will cost you more out the door, but will hold it's value more too.

Personally, if I had to have something totally custom... I'd buy parts and build my own guitar. Not everyone has the time or ability to do that though. If I had to buy a guitar 'new' with my parts/etc spec'd out, I'd go GMW.

Well if you don't mind a bolt-on neck then there are tons of options from Warmoth, Musikraft, USACG, etc.

If you want a neck-thru as far as I know there is Carvin and there is now Jamerson http://www.jamersonguitars.com

Pete, the resale on Carvins is coming up. Not skyrocketing, but you can at least get like $600 out of 'em. Not bad considering what they are new.

There's no Carvin World dealer in Ireland, so a month ago I asked if they'd ship to me direct. They said no and redirected me to a dealer in the UK. You can spec up your guitar on the main website and then estimate the cut your dealer's taking... Incidentally, I didn't go ahead with it.

Sounds to me like Carvin is the way to go for you....DEFINITELY!

I went with Carvin because I wanted a neck thru 24 fret 7 string with a maple fret board, Stainless Steel frets and a floyd.
GMW will do one for me (and I may still have them build one for me) but I'll be waiting a year for it and it will cost about $500.00 more than a Carvin.
My Carvin 7 is an awesome guitar.
Where else could I have gone to get those specs on a 7 and not either pay up the ass or wait a year?

kmanick, you did the right thing! Your 7 string is gorgeous and just might be the very guitar that has driven me to plan a Carvin 7 string order (or two, or three)! I am really impressed with their tops and bursts lately. Have you seen that Carribean burst CT? Stunning! I gotta have a 727 in that color. Dragonburst rules too, and their trans-purple.

Yep ... I would love to get a dragonburst!! I wish I had kept the catalog with the example pic of the dragonburst in it.

Ah ... they had plenty of dragonburst guitars at the carvin museum for me to drool over. They do not seem to be very consistent in them though. Maybe it was just the lighting in some of the pics,
