  • Very cool new guitars from Squier

Last week I attended the Frankfurt Musicfair, the European version of the NAMM if you like. And one of the first stands I saw was the one from Fender but it was their cheaper devision that REALLY got my GAS-ing.

Because they have a very cool Blackmore-looking Strat with Duncan hotrails...

And a very classy looking Thinline Telecaster

And for the punkrockers among us, Sum 41 Vocalist/rythm guitarist Deryck Whibley got his own signature model.

The crosses are removable and you could give that one an EVH stripes job and put in your fave humbucker and have yourself a cool one pickup schredder.

I don't think I've ever seen an EVH striped tele before. But there is always a first of everything right?

        Looking great!

        I also dig this tele:

"I hate these filthy neutrals! With enemies, you know where they stand. But with neutrals... who knows? It sickens me!"

The hotrails Strat does look nice. If you can get it with a maple fingerboard, even more so! I hope they'll be available in the US and not just Europe...

I must say that Hotrails strat is cool too :| I don't like the big headstock but this looks ... cool...?

I tried one of those CAR Squier with the small headstock and the Duncan Designed single coils. REALLY needed a GOOD setup. But sounded decent. Worth the money if you negotiate with the shop for a fret dress and new nut.

Hotrails may look cool but they sound very flat to me. I've had them on my Strat in bridge position. Distortion is pretty linear, clean is very bad for my ears.
I stick to stock vintage pickups for american strat. I love just it when I can get slightly overdriven clean and in another second whole distortion and noise army marching.

IMHO, hotrails aren't bad at all but I think Stratocaster plays better with stock pickups unless you're looking for really high output pickup. I combine two distortion pedals (Boss DS-1, Danelectro T-Bone Distortion) for boosting or just for simple overdrive. I love the distortion being more crunchy, organic, not "plastic".

You have a point, but since this is not a vintage American Strat, but an Asian Squier, the hotrails would be a great improvement over whatever was previously stock for a Squier Stratocaster. They are probably Duncan Designeds and not real Duncans anyway.

In that arena, a budget guitar, I'd rather have cheap hotrails than cheap single-coils. At least they'll be less noisy with more output.

They're Duncan Designed on the pic. Which means you can sell one for 20 bucks and pickup a second hand Duncan for 30 more. Worth it if the guitar is resonant to start with. I too am a sucker for a bog standard Strat tone but sometimes... gotta crank it all up.
