i have very fond memories of the aria catalogs from that era. loved those ZZs... don't you have a 1/2 black 1/2 white one? i think that was my favorite.
I've had a few all were very good guitars.I got razzed a lot for playing them but they sounded so good.I had a pearl white one and a black and silver1/2 and 1/2.

WTF? Why would anyone razz you for playing one of them? Bah, people are so closed minded eh? I've had enough Arias to realize how well made they are. They do look a little 80s, but that's cool!!!
I can answer that. The trems are not bad quality at all. In fact they are better than most non-OFR floyds in that respect. The major problem I have with them is that the saddles have these locking clamps that lock the strings in place. Instead of cutting the ball ends off like you do with a floyd, you feed the string in through the back, and then clamp it down with the top clamp thing. It's a good idea, because they are much easier to use than the floyd clamps, and almost indestructible. We all know how easy the block on a floyd can crack. The problem is, the clamps are bulky and get in the way of muting. It feels very uncomfortable. The other problem, is that the pivot point (knife edges) on these trems are further back, so you can't just pop in a OFR without relocating your posts.
In this pic, you can see both the bulky clamps (the black things), and the odd knife edge location.
