The first and fifth digits in the serial number tell you the year. The second thru forth tell you what day of the year.

Except for 1994, in which it was the first and second number for the year.

Somehow during gigs, the High E string gets caught under the pickup Bobbin. Its to keep that from happening...

First of all, Gibson have produced chambered Les Pauls models before (mostly CS, though - like Catalina or Elegant).

Then, at the end of the day the only things that matter is the tone and playability. And the actual technology doesn't matter.

As for "lack of better lightweight mahogany", there are tons of old lespauls out there that weigh a ton.

sad thing is I think they are going to probably sell more les pauls now that they are lighter and that Gibson says they sound better. All the newer/younger guitar players that can afford one will like them better. (The ones who don't know what LP tone should be like)
Even better they pushed all you die hard LP lovers into buying the expensive models. Marketing at work once again. Are they fucking up or smarter then we are?

Yep..well that's 99.9% of the problem. The tone sucks. The older routes were much different and much more actual wood remained in the body. Besides Catalina's were sold as a chick guitar. Pastel blue and yellow with pearl plastic? You ever see a 5'2 110lb woman weild a12lb Custom? I've now played and eyeballed 10 new chambered Standards. The wood quality is noticeably lower. It is very loose grained.

Personally, I think the lighter weights are good, but not at the cost of sound quality. Honestly, the neck pick up doesn't sound so horrible..reminds me of an ES bridge, but the bridge pick up is sounds horrible. It's another in a long string of recent Gibson abominations. Anybody that has played a LP for years will instantly notice a huge difference.

I think the BFG was a Gibson experiement to measure how stupid people can be; another horse shit sounding guitar. Probably enough nit-wits jumped on those things for them to feel comfortable enough to mess with a Standard design. Maybe the newer people will be like "now I'm like Jimmy Page cause I have an awesome Les Paul" and just think it's normal out of stupidity, ignorance or both? When they start posting stuff like "I can't get good tone out of my DSL100...it sounds thrash, trebly and weak!". I guess we'll know what the real culprit is...........

Get ready for a big PR-advertising blitz in your Guitar World and G1. If I know Gibson, they're going to try and make this look like the greatest thing since internet porn.

Is that something to do with the 100 year anniversary? I bought my Flying V in 94 and it came with the anniversary hang tags and stuff but years later when I checked the serial, it says it was made in 92, so I'll have to check it's number again.

Iw was explained to as a Special serial number to readily identify guitars that were made during the 100th anniversary year.....
