  • EVH Frankenstein

I spent about half an hour playing and checking out the Frankenstein

It's really a pretty cool guitar, but mainly because you know it's very similar to what Ed has and plays right NOW, and the history of what it copies.

First surprise? it feels like an old strat, much moreso than the guitars it spawned, it has a definite strat vibe

It played really well, action was fast and loose.

It did seem to be a much more 'live' guitar than the EVH's, but still similar in feel.

The neck is the same 1-5/8" shape assymetrical one associated with ed, very grungy. The trem has that totally loose bar like on all his guitars I've seen up close, you'd think it unplayable that way but he does it. The spring and claw seem installed like an afterthought. The pickup is super low output, I think it's more strat like than the 78 which I find to be almost P-90 ish. The electronics assembly is something that if you saw it outside a guitar you'd swear it was for the recycling bin. The 'tone' pot has virtually NO resistance to it, like it would free spin.

The body is where it gets interesting, it is really banged up it's surface cratered from burns dings and bizzare different layers of paint. The reflectors are cracked and broken with glue residue from them really prevalent. There is duct tape, painted over tape, some of the stripes have pronounced ridges. I expected it to be a lot heavier than it was. It is actually cleaner than the Ed guitars I've handled which were seriously grungy and rusty, these strings were even non-gangrene inducing. The distressing is also done in stages, to the body blank, black only, striped and finally red you can tell by the way the paint builds up , covers gouges, layers over old tape and the lines of the old stripes (the white was put on pretty thick and not sanded back I'm guessing. I was also surprised at how many screw holes it had in it.

Lot of cigarette burns as well. Huge couple of them one on the front of the upper bout, wonder if that's from nodding off playing with a smoke.

It was a fun experience, totally reinforced the 'tone is in your hands' I think it would be basically a useless instrument to anybody but Ed, but that is probably EXACTLY what he was going for, it truly does seem like it was created by a crazy man, completely unique, seemingly haphazard and utterly whacked.

I'd love to have one for the wall, it's an incredible conversation piece and a real representation of some important guitar history, you can literally see the evolutionary changes he made to it, if you look at it closely you can see all the remnants of the various paint jobs, including the original solid black he put down.

but at $25,000 it ain't for me or many others but out of the 5 they received 2 were sold and one reserved

I'm sorry if what I'm about to say could sound stupid or something like that. I personally don't understand and probably never will, why do people wanna buy guitars, which are REPLICAS of something, and you are paying a "dude" to grab his car keys and scratch the hell out of a guitar, then burn it with cigarettes, then stain the fretboard, etc etc.

Don't get me wrong. If i were a true COLLECTOR, I'd be really interested in getting EVH's real guitar, and I'd pay quite a lot of money, I guess, since it's the real thing, it's a relic of rock and roll or whatever. That, I understand.

But, spending so much money for a replica, it just doesn't fit in my head. I mean, first of all, you'll ALWAYS know it's not the original and that it's not the real thing and that everybody will know that, no matter what you tell 'em. Second, and this may be "polemic", but, why would anyone buy a signature guitar in the first place? I'd never buy a guitar that has someone else's name written on it, NO WAY, it's like the biggest disrespect you can do to yourself, specially if you ARE a guitarrist. It's like if you're a paintor, you'd buy a canvas that has a REPLICA of Picasso's signature on it, and whatever you paint, it will "say" Picasso. Something like that, I guess.

I mean, maybe if I were a collector (again) I'd buy a signature guitar, MAYBE. But, I wont buy the RELIC version, that's just weird, I mean, okay, I can deal with having the signature guitar framed in my living room, knowing still that it's not the guy's real guitar, it's just a production model, but then, having a RELIC made? How fake would that be? I mean, do people actually forget that some guy named PANCHO was scraping down the paint of the guitar and that you're paying 25 grand for THAT? (I know there are "more things" but come on, this is the main stuff).

Anyway, I've always thought of this issue to be very strange. Really, having someone else's sig on my guitar or amp is like saying "dude, I play my own stuff... but I have Kirk Hammett's sig on my rig ", how strange is that? I mean, the far I'd go would be to buy signature pedals, but even then, I'd rather go with the regulars. Plus, most "signature" guitars can be found in the regular producton model version, if you wanna customize it, then why not just buy the prod. guitar, change the pickups, put on some scratches, stickers, grab a marker and write down your name, whatever man, that sounds much more authentic to me.

Finally, focusing on the EVH guitars... do people ACTUALLY like the stripes? I'm pretty sure that Van Halen did that to the guitar because it was a plain simple strat and he wanted to make it look "weird" so he added that stuff. But... I mean, really, is it THAT cool? I personally think that say, a bloodbath graphic, or a shatterd mirror, or even a snake skin graphic looks much better, it also does the purpose, so much better too. But well, he said he did it since it was the only things he had around, right? I prefer the Wolfgang or Music Man shapes much better.

People buy reproduction furniture. It's horses for courses, a deck chair keeps your arse off the floor just as well as an expensive Chippendale.

This guitar has been made to fill a gap in the market they had and thought they could turn a profit on. Lets face it they are more than likely going to go up in value.

I on the other hand could probably live with the 20+ guitars I could buy with the money!

Don't get me wrong..the following is not a specifically anti-EVH statement. I love Eddie like a crazy brother!

WTF IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE!. $25000 for an EVH pile of crap or $9000 for an aged pile of aged Zakk Wylde crap or $20,000 for a aged pile of Page crap..the crap list goes on and on.crap..crap...CRAP! I, for one, would rather spend way too much money on something that does jettison buttloads of money into some "needy rock legend's ripped jeans pocket" for a used up pile of nostalgo-crap.

Take a brand new freakin guitar and give it to a public school or a charity program. Let a bunch of kids learn how to play it....let them write their name on the back. After 5 years sell it for $10000. Put the money back into the program.
                      1. You get them same beat up humpty-ass Sanford & Son guitar
                      2. What do you know maybe you have the signature of a future legend? (rock star rookie card)
                      3. Money goes into good hands...it's all about the kids and the art... not to some dead guy's estate or to "whores and crack habits" or some buttloving Corp that wants to "be number one in domestic sales".
                      4. Take 10% on the $$$ and plant a freakin tree. Tree trade CO2 for oxygen, it's hard to breath a guitar

I've said it before and I'll say it again-

                        Expensive guitars are cheap art.

This ain't marketed to us - it's marketed to people who think nothing of hanging 100's of thousands of dollars or even millions of dollars on their walls.

$25,000 grand for a replica guitar, put into context vs. a $100,000 lithograph is not really so outlandish, but that's the demographic.

People who I refer to as having dog dollars, $7 for each normal Joe's $1

Could it be better spent saving the world, yes.

FWIW these are also the people the charities target for the big $$$$, - demographics and dollars plain and simple.

I've paid $6K for Murphy's and feel silly doing it since they don't play any better than my other '59's, but they sure look cool and there's something about them. One thing i've noticed is that I don't hold back playing them even though they cost an arm and a leg, I certainly play more carefully when I play an expensive Jackson with a nice glossy finish...It kinda feels good to "grip it and rip it" on a real expensive guitar and not worry about babying it..

WTF do we care what other people spend their money on? Sure, if I even had $25k to blow on a single guitar or whatever, I'd never spend it on something like that. But that doesn't mean I sit around wondering why the people who do are "stupid" enough to do so.

It's their money - let them do whatever the f**k they want with it. And don't hold anything against them for doing so. They earned it, and that gives them the right to do whatever the f**k they want with it. More power to 'em.

Just because you or I would choose to do differently with that kind of coin doesn't make them "stupid".
