Cheaper basses and bass amps?

A buddy of mine is looking to by his first bass and bass amp shortly and I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions? He's looking to spend around $500 CND ($475 USD) on the bass and about half that on a cheap (possibly used) amp. I've heard good things about G&L and Peavey EXP basses, any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Your on the right track...any Peavey Bass is a good one.
And see if you can swing the Fender B-DEC! Its a great gigging

+1 on the Yamaha bass... for modern CNC machining...you cant go
wrong with a lower end Peavey or Yamaha.

Ashdown amps are the best bang for the buck.... stay away from shit like Hartke
