  • so I upgraded the hardware on my Carvin 7

Put in a set of Bareknuckle pickups (Cold Sweat at the neck, Nailbomb at
the bridge) and dropped in an OFR bridge and locking nut.
Big improvement over the Carvin stock pickups.
The Cold Sweat sounds like a Duncan 59 but with glassier touch to it,
almost like a cross between a 59 (neck) and a Duncan Jazz.

The Nail Bomb (which I was disappointed with at first) sounds like a
smoother Duncan JB but on roids and without the "ice picky highs" that you can get with a JB.
My tech put it in a little lower than
he normally would because the output is so high and the guys over on the
BK forum said to play with the pickup height and, by george ,just raising it
up a bit put it into "it's Zone" .
Now it sounds like I had hoped it would when I bought it in the first place.
the Nail bomb has good note articulation (Low B stays focused.)
I had to drop the bass a bit and raise the mids on both my JSX and my
5150 (which I have to do with my soloist
that has a JB in there too) and now it sounds great.
the 5150 loves these pickups, they take to high gain really well.

The OFR feels sturdier to me than the licensed trem that Carvin uses for
their 7's. Not that that trem was "Bad" but if I have a floyded guitar I just
prefer to have the OFR on there, it's like an old friend I know it so well.
anyways I liked this guitar with the creme pickups I ordered it with but the black BKs work for me too.

Anyone thinking about trying a 7 should check one of these out, very easy to play.
I actually play this guitar about 80% of the time I play now (even for 6 string stuff) because it's just so much fun to play.

If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

I'm going to swap the pickups in mine as well, but I'm not sold on the OFR.

the licensed trem is OK, there was a tiny bit of play in it that I just couldn't get rid of, plus the metal is pretty soft (according to my tech
who actually suggested getting an OFR to put in, last time he saw it)
so I figured I might as well. I plan on keeping this one around for a while
so why not get it exactly how I like it, you know?
I have been jonesing for a Petrucci 7 though, I need to try one to see
if the neck and the "feel" of those jive with me like this one does.
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

Looks great, Nick. I think the OFR7 replacement is a solid move.
