  • Someone please tell me i did NOT make a mistake here??

I hear they are "Rare" but having come across 2 in the last 10 weeks
make me wonder if im going to have a chance to pick up another one
this year? Or never see another RG20 again? (1994 only year made
Zero tension neck, 2 HB AAA top) I showed my blue one a couple months
ago, thinking it was a bargain at $400 (and now i know that it is!)
But this weekend ive been in touch with a guy who has a Koa topped
RG20! Got to inspect it today...and its been gigged with, so it had 4 or
5 dents, 3 or 4 3/8" nicks in the back of the neck, and the 5 way selector
switch was missing the black plastic end piece, and the brass bow" in the
back of the neck at the headstock had quite a "Gap" in it, between the
locking nut, and the top brass piece. Also it looked like the veneer "Black"
headstock was split somewhat along the top edge, like it might be separating?
And 2 of the case lock down swivels were missing entirely! Only 1
near the headstock could keep the case closed! At $750 i passed.
Did i do the right thing? My blue one is a string thru...(which gives
it ton's o' sustain) and this was a "licensed by Floyd Rose" 94' trem...
(which i seem to remember reading were NOT that good?
I kept thinking..."i have a better one at home, that i paid $400
for, so why am i considering paying $350 more for one with a better looking top, but in `1/2 the condition"? What would you have done?
Rarebility factor quite high, as there may be only 15 of these in
this Koa top. But im a cosmetic Whore, and wont own anything that
is not "near mint". Your thoughts on my "No Sale" ?

may just be my opinion, mate, and i don't know too much about these but, i probably would've passed too.

but i'm not much of a collector/rare-minded guy anymore. and the condition sounds iffy.

just my opinion though! your blue one sounds really lovely though!

I am a diehard Ibanez player myself. My favorites are the RG550's. I had a few USRG Dave Bunker zero tension guitars. They were outstanding. I will say that they don't play or sound any better than a stock RG550 though. I also have a 1st year 7621 that kills bugs dead.
If you are a collector.. the USRG's are a great investment. There are alot of grea investment Ibanez guitars. Especially the signature models.
If you are a player... you can't really go wrong with an RG550 or any model # above it.

Geez dude, what does it really matter what we think? It matters what you think, right? So since you need validation, I'm assuming you think you made the wrong decision. So I guess you should have bought it...

Beat to shit? No thanks. I'm not a fan of these anyway. More of a gimmick than anything. I'm with jgcable, the RG500 series rules. Still being made today. That should tell you something...

But no, I wouldn't have bought it. I wouldn't have bought it if it was mint either. I would have taken that money and found a couple of RG's. Maybe a 520QS since those are mahogany. And a 550 or 570...

            Heres one on jemsite.

They really are not that rare...

Edit: I don't remember a koa model. Don't see one here either...

in that ad, but if it would have been near mint...and maybe $550 i
would be showing pics of it!

HA HA HA!! That's too funny man!!!

I wish you would have gotten pics. I'm not saying there was never a Koa topped one. I've just never seen one in the catalogues or anywhere. But I highly doubt that someone retopped one. That wouldn't make sense...

I think you made the right decision. Since they are not uber-rare, others in better shape will come along. Seems like for the price and condition, I would have passed too...

Your going to see a huge increase in Sustain... plus what a shred
neck! About 1/2 the thickness of a normal strat neck.
