First generation LTDs such as the MII were as good as their ESP counterparts. Rumour has it they were built in the same Japanese factory as ESPs were, to give their new LTD brand a strong head start.Comment

it could come down to the number of guitars you want too. kamelot endorses ESP guitars now, but the last several times i have seen them, thom only plays a horizon and an eclipse. they are not LTDs, but he only has the two. come to think of it, i am not sure what their endorsement deal entails, because he also played a jackson slsmg and a dean ml at the show a couple of weeks ago. i know he used to be endorsed by jackson before fender bought the company....but he auctioned off a lot of his jackson's and gave the money to the spring hill SPCA. anyway, maybe if you want more ESP's you need to take the LTDs....GEAR:

not wishing to irate either of you in this heated argument, but yes, same wood on two guitars can sound different. What you are missing is, "same grade" of wood. There are different places in the world growing mahogany. Some are better than others. hence difference in tone. A mahogany guitar made 50 years ago will have much better tone than a mahogany guitar made today. The ESP's could have (notice the underscore to "could" to indicate the guessing...) better grade mahogany than the LTD's.Originally posted by goodwood View Post

In my opinion the LTD-400 series and up are very well made guitars. Especially compared to a similar priced import Dean, BC Rich or Epiphone.
Why is ESP more popular?
-Many popular bands play them.
-Easier to get than a Jackson (here, anyway)

You are right. One of the big factors (not the only one) that go into much of the grading of wood is whether or not the wood is 'suitable' for transparent finishes...that's a visual thing. Much of the grading issues are visual...in fact, highly coveted birdseye maple is actually a disease in the wood. Woods grown in areas that have short growing seasons (normally characterized by having prominent winters) will be denser due to the shorter growing seasons and hence the tighter grain.Originally posted by emperor_black View Post
