Anything with a pickup at the neck is part of the Assassin family as Chrisolsen stated. I had the same question a while ago regarding my hum-single:

As long as I'm posting pics, here's my glow-in-the-dark Scary Face 'slinger:

there was a gunslinger 2's, 2 pickup model of the slinger. assassins had a different headstock, IIRC & they didnt come out untill a couple of yrs after slingers. back then BCR was at a very odd point. neckthru production was almost non existant & they were pumping out ST-3's & slingers at around 250 guitars a month. there was alot of experimenting & weird combinations of pickups & hardware. the only thing i havent seen is a 1 HUM st-3 & a 3 pickup gunslinger, tho one probably exist...... other than that ive seen almost every combo.

What was the difference between the Gunslinger and the ST-III? I remember when the ST-III first came out ('85-'86ish) it was a neck through model...later on was it available as a bolt-on?

ST-III has 3 pickups, 3 toggles for pickup off/on, usually rosewood fingerboard, normal point down headstock, yes came as bolt-on. Here's my purple/black crackle:

I must've preemptively stolen it three years ago, then. I guess I'm just that bad ass.

If we're doings ST-III's, here's my Lightning Sky (currently undergoing restoration):

that lightning sky is CLASS AXE made note the straight fretboard end.

ST-3 have no recess for the floyd, rounder sides & standard neck heal. slingers have recess under the floyd, tele/soloist sides & an angled heal.
there are rare occassion of ST-3s with reverse headstocks & slingers with normal headstock

As I've mentioned before, my BC is identical to mountaindog's blue snakeskin above, but is grey/black. I still believe it to be a gunslinger, and not an assassin, though. I swear I've seen some old magazine ads for the gunslinger where Tracii Guns or someone was holding one with two pickups also. In fact, I think I have such an advertisement in one of the old mags I have around here somewhere. I'll have to dig for it and post my results.

The way I've always understood it is that Gunslingers are 1 hum...Assassins are 2 hum....but I think there may have been some overlap & variation in the early days of the Gunslinger.

Tracii Guns had some of the earliest prototypes & many of them were 2 hum...but I do believe they still called them Gunslingers (I think things got more specific after they really got going with production).

Tracii had the 2 hum Gunslinger that was black with purple flames....that one was in an ad.

He also had this black/white paisley 2 hum that was in an ad...in the 'Never Enough Video'...and recently sold on Ebay.

And Tracii had the black "Cry No More" 2 hum Gunslinger that was in the 'Bitch Is Back' video. I currently own this one. (The neck has been changed...the original neck had diamond inlays....as did the paisley & the purple flame)
