  • My new Orville Les Paul Custom

Well, the Orville I got from Ebay (see my thread in "Efraid") showed up today. I went to the customs office to get it, and it turned out to be a nice surprise..I've allways wanted a black custom, but I think the price for a Gibby is just too much! I got this for 700 usd including shipping, plus Norwegian taxes..It has the EMG 81/85-combo, tonepros bridge and Grover tuners..It plays really good, and sounds perfect for my taste as well! A nice player!
I could really do without the lousy (or lack of) communication with the seller, but hey - it's here, and I payed less than half of what I can sell it for over here..

    Sorry for the crappy pics!

Hey Fett, the seller told me it's a 1998-model..There are some pages where you can check up on serialno's and such, so I'll try that when I get home from vacation..

That looks like a law suit guitar from before Gibson went to court. I may be wrong.

Beautiful guitar...............Orville is a division of Gibson. Both Orville and Epiphone are allowed by Gibson to do Gibson headstocks for the Japanese market. Is that a rosewood fingerboard though? Les Paul Customs (at least the Gibsons) are supposed to come with Ebony fingerboards............

+1, or maybe Gibson will sue themselves for a profit?

Looks like rosewood to me, and that just looks wrong on a Custom. Get some dye from Stew-Mac and ebonize that fretboard.

BTW, Gibson is doing the same thing Jackson did. If you want an ebony fretboard, you have to buy a real Gibson. Jackson professionals first came out with ebony, but too many people bought those, and so Jackson made them switch to rosewood.

If the Sam Ash SL2H Archtop had an ebony fretboard, I'd be all over it. I'd yank the MOTO inlays and replace with MOP, and that would be a badass guitar.

Maybe the same could be done with the Orville? Rip out the MOTO inlays, dye the fretboard, and put in some MOP inlays. It would help a lot. Here is my '77 Custom neck:
