  • Orville L.P.

I saw one today for $950.00 Just could not justify that much for a photo flame topped guitar.Nice but not that nice.Am I being to critical here?
How much do these go for usually?Hell the early 90s Shecter tele was only $600.00.Maybe its me.
    Really? well screw Mark Twain.

photo flame? no way my good man. Only the Orville with the 'by Gibson" underneath the Orville logo's that are real tops go for that kind of money.
the most perfect copy i've seen is a Tokai Love Rock-LS-80, and an old Orville from '84 or so. They were both fetching in the 15-1700 range and that was a while ago.

Veneer is cheap enough that no real guitar should EVER have a photoflame top. EVAR!!!!. Even a cheapo SX GG1 I have that cost me $189 has a flame veneer top.
      Sleep!!, That's where I'm a viking!!

Tommy are you saying the ones that say "by gibson" have real tops? This one just has the "Orville" logo in pearl. The flame top just has no depth even veneer has depth when clear coat is applied. Its a damn nice guitar don't get me wrong but I can score an 84 L.P.studio standard for 100.00 bucks more.

Yes, I would say that, supposedly between those and the old Tokai Love Rocks, they were as good as the '59 reissues that you see now, and so forth, and they went through the roof not long ago.

some say Orville By Gibson, and some just say Orville. The plain orvilles can be really nice as well, it just depends, there were so many grades of guitars made, Ibanez made some nice old Pauls as well, the non bolt on ones at least. You have Burny as well, so many , and it's hard to tell sometimes which a re good and which are not until you see the By Gibson, or the Tokai 's from the early to mid 80's.

I did some research and the ones with the "by gibson"are the later production. They did use veneer on most and full tops on upper end ones. The holy grail of Orville's seems to be the "black beauty version".
Nice guitar but still thats a lot of coins for an import but they are made in a Gibson authorized plant so I guess I can see why they are so expensive.

check out the Tokai Love Rock LS-60's, 80's, 100' ,120's, i think the first was the LS-50, but the best looking one I ever saw was an 80, and it went for over 2300.00 , it was the nicest paul i'd seen in a while. I don't like the over the top flame , i like the tighter thin kinda tiger like ribbon to a flame top , the over the top is headachey as nice as they are.

Hi, "Orville by Gibson" is the older production and more desirable. Also fetches more money. They made Orville by Gibson for only a few years from approx late 80s through early 90s. Then they came out with the plain old Orvilles. Still made by Gibson in Japan, but did not say "by Gibson" on the headstock. Still good guitars, but not as desirable to collectors. Those also lasted a few years and now the Japanese Gibsons are Epiphones. I am more into Tokais, Grecos, and Burnys. I've never owned an O or an ObG, but they are supposed to be good quality axes, and I would be very surprised--amazed actually--if a Japan-made O or ObG had a photo-flame top. I believe even the lowest models were veneer. Cheers!
