Gibson SG help needed.

Fett, get some pics and a serial number. Who knows it could be a real 60's model someone refinished! Especially, since it sounds like a inexperienced person did the job. I have seen it before. You can check with Gibson on the serial number.

No sure why, but...

I have a pair of SG's - a 63 Special and a 98 Std. While the SG doesn't look as futuristic as many of my Charvels and Jacksons, it is the guitar that gave birth to Heavy Metal. My 98 SG Std sounds phenominal; great sounding tone.

I hate the looks of them.. and this is where I get a lynch mob to form.. I hate Kelly's also.. I hate their shape.. I'm just going on looks.. not how they play.

My problem with the SG's, is when I think Gibson, I'm so used to the LP, that SG just feels and plays like a strange copy. It doesn't have the sustain, the weight, it just falls into an odd comparison. On it's own, not a bad guitar. But I can't get away from the LP image I have memorized in my hands. The necks can be great on them.

SG's are just a different animal. I have more LP's than SG's. Both have their sound. You want tone, listen to Derek Trucks of Allman Bros. or as a solo artist, or even Angus.

I don't know where to start. This is one butchered up SG. To call it a cruddy refin is not enough. The paint is just awful. The whole guitar looks like is was whittled on with a pocketknife. Oh. AND NO SERIAL NUMBER

Looks like a SG Standard according to the truss rod cover. Looks also recent. The only way to tell is if you can make out the serial number. When the finish was stripped they removed all the grain filler, masked the logo and sprayed it with a can. This one would require major rework to correct it. A full strip and grain fill to level the surface would be required, then refinished.

Oh, no serial number, only if it is a keeper project for painting practice. And if you got it cheap enough. $99 should be a good price.

I had the guy take it down so I could see it. I know what to look for. The serial number was completely removed. This was from a pawnshop. One guy said he thinks they have a serial number somewhere. But if it isn't on the back of the headstock, they don't. Am I wrong? I just said; "How could you have loaned anything on this?" $595?:ROTF: :ROTF: :ROTF: :ROTF: :ROTF:

That guitar could be saved, but I'd have to get it for about 300 bucks to make it worth the time and effort.

The tuners have been changed to round Grovers. I don't think they would let me take it apart to look at the pups. This is so hacked up. The logos are intact. But the dude scarped all the rest off the front. I could feel the saved logos. As in, there are 1/32 ridges. These are the same guys that are trying to sell a Fender HM that is so far away from stock, it's a $99 guitar. And they still want $399.

Yeah, walk away! Yep, your right the Serial number should be on the top back of the headstock. On those Standards, it was stamped. They probably sanded it off when the used paint stripper or coarse sandpaper. It's pretty much trashed, but savable as a project for a real cheap price.

Nope, the Fadeds have gold logos. That one looks like the inlayed pearl Gibson logo, along with the flower pot thingy, meaning it's a probably a Standard...

The neck binding gives it away too as well as the trap inlays, the faded didn't have either of those...

Is it me or does it look like it has bronze acoustic strings on it?
