  • Sykes Les Paul G.A.S.!!!!

What do you do when you can't afford a Sykes "Inspired By" Series Les Paul? Well, make your own! Just grab that old Black LPC that's collecting dust in the closet It's already reliced and ready to go! (Of course not as reliced as John's, but that's too much for me) I've had this one for years and has been my "tone of reference" guitar. I one upped Gibson and used RS electronics and TonePros/Graphtech locking hardware. The neck is not maple, but I like Mahogany on LP's anyway. Less bright.

    Body & Hardware:
Flat carved maple top & solid mahogany back
Multi-ply white/black binding on top and back
    Aged chrome hardware
Tone Pros Locking Aluminum Nashville TOM bridge (Superbridge)/Stopbar tailpiece
Aged ebony finish (All by myself over the years)
WD Custom Mirror pickguard from tracing (stock one did not fit) & metal chrome switchwasher/no switch tip

    Neck & Headstock:
1 pc. Mahogany with 22 fret ebony fingerboard & pearl block inlays
    Short neck tenon
Rounded neck profile with single-ply white binding
    24 3/4” scale length, 1 11/16” nut width
Polished Chrome Sperzel tuners (instead of the Grovers)
Graphtech nut & 70s-style Gibson headstock logo

    Electronics & Strings:
Gibson Dirty Fingers™ exposed humbucking pickup with chrome mounting
    ring in bridge
’57 Classic exposed humbucking pickup with chrome mounting ring in neck (took cover off stock one) Saved major bucks
RS 2 volume, 2 tone Super Pots*, 3-way selector switch
*True to John's Les Paul, the lead tone control is disabled
    Gibson Vintage Reissue .010 strings

    Tools:
    1 StewMac knurled nut wrench

    Before Shot:

    Cleaning up:

    After Shot:

I spent a small fortune on parts, but a heck of a lot less than $7,300 street price to get one of these. I have enough to go by an amp (or two) now:ROTF:

    Now, go build your own!

Thanks man! I had to wait till WD got done with my pickguard ($60, yikes) It fits like a glove now. (even better than the pic shows) I need to take some more pics. I still had to do a little Dremel work to fit it. The pup rings are Chrome plated brass. I drilled lightining holes from underneath. They weighed a ton. I got at least a gram off each one by drilling The Dirty Fingers Pup is "in your face loud". I wanted to check the ohms, but I think it's over 9 ohms from the sound of it.

Now, I just need some "Jelly Roll":ROTF:

              that is BEAUTIFUL!

after I get a project done, i was thinking that my next electric purchase might be a Burny Sykes model, or a Burny LP with a Kahler just for fun

Wow! Nice job! Watching old Sykes vids when he was in Thin Lizzy had me Jonesing for a black Custom. Picked up a black Burny LPC, in gold hardware, though. Just MAY have to make the switch, like you did. Looks gorgeous!

Thanks for the comments. It definitely was a little work. Since Sperzel came out with the polished (instead of Satin) tuners, I just love them! A call to guitarpartsresource, WD (had to mail them a template for the pickguard) and several others I got all the stuff. There is a guy on eBay that has the best prices on TonePro's hardware. A bunch of the folks on the Les Paul Forum buy from him.

The guitar even feels super charged now

Looks great. Nice set of mods.

And +1 on the polished chrome Sperzels. Love 'em - so much, that I swapped out the ugly old satin chromes on my GMP and Carvin a while ago. The gold looks great, too. Can't stand that ugly satin-looking s**t.

I'm gonna go against the grain and say I think the BEFOE picture looks a better but I'm a sucker for Black LPC's with Gold harsdware

Do you notice any difference in tone when going from the stock tailpiece to the TonePros? I'm just curious how the TionePro stuff is as that is what came on my umport Mockingbird

I do like the Sykes model and was eyeballing the Edwards version for a while, still debating that or a mock with a Floyd

Doesn't Sykes use a brass nut?
