  • My first custom built guitar

So, my band received an endorsement from a custom guitar builder in SoCal. Here is my first true custom shop guitar. I am a HUGE fan of the Jackson Kelly Star, the Pointy Star and the Dan Fastuca "Fast Star". It is based, not too loosely on these with some minor differences. On all the afore mentioned guitars, the bottom point of the "V" shape is smaller like a Rhoads, on mine they are more like a King V, the horn under the neck is shaped closer to the one on a BC Rich Mockingbird, and I rounded outward the curve coming off the top of the neck. Here are the specs:

    Body: Solid Mahogany Neck-Thru
    Color: Undecided
    Neck Dimensions: 3rd Fret: .790", 12th Fret: .850"
    Tuning Machines: Die-Cast Tuners
    Fingerboard: Ebony
    Inlays: Mother Of Pearl "Tusks"
No. of Frets: 22 Jumbo Frets
    Binding: White 3 ply Neck/Headstock
Bridge Pickup: Seymour Duncan SH-5 Duncan Custom Humbucking Pickup
Neck Pickup: Seymour Duncan TB-10 Full Shred Humbucking Pickup
    Controls: Master Volume
Bridge: Floyd Rose Original Double Locking 2-Point Tremolo
    Pickup Switching: 3 way toggle
    Position 1: Bridge Pickup
Position 2: Bridge and Neck Pickup
    Position 3: Neck Pickup
    Hardware: Black
    Strings: .009 to .042
    Scale Length: 25.5"
    Width at Nut: 1-11/16"
Compound (12" to 16") Fingerboard Radius
    CTS Pots and Switchcraft Switches

Here are some mock ups I did. What do you all think, love it or hate it???

    Black w/Green Bevels

Trans Red w/Rosewood Stringers (ala BC Rich)

Headstock is ghey and doesn't match the body. Who is the builder?

Mammoth Custom Shop. It kinda reminds me of the ESP AX series headstock. I don't think it looks any more out of place than the 3 per side headstock on a warrior.

Which Mammoth? "Official" or the other one? By the headstock shape I'm assuming official.

I don't know nor had I ever heard of the guy, but I inquired about a custom body from the "official" one. The price he shot me was waaay lower than what I expected, or what anyone else came up with... so I hesitated, then lost interest.

Headstocks are difficult...It's much easier to get radical with the body/FB designs, and, to me, coming up with good looking headstock shapes is as difficult as creating "company mission statements", or band names. It's just not in my territory.
Otherwise, it looks cool. Hope the quality is good for you. I would prefer a trans black quilted with the fluorescent green.

If I were me, I would either enlarge the fret markers or not have them at all. And the headstock needs to be more dramatic. The body looks great. But all the rest throws off the "Balanced Look". That's my 25 cents or maybe few more.
I am a true ass set to this board.

I'm not a big dean fan. The only ML I have played that I liked was a USA custom shop but I ain't paying $3500 for one. I'd say this is closer to the Washburn Stealth than the ML. The inlays will be larger than those on the pictures, I just threw them on for shits and giggles. It is the "official" site by the way.

He is VERY reasonable. I am starting out with this one with very basic options. Provided it comes out as well as I am hoping, I will go buck wild after that.

I really like the shape, but the headstock is ugly as hell, and doesn't match the body shape at all.

It looks like it's trying to be too many OTHER guitars: King V, Kelly, Mockingbird, Star. Sorry, but all those I just mentioned are better looking guitars than this. But, hey, if you like it, that's all that really matters, right?

I really like the black/green one. The trans red one is kinda eh. Headstock isn't that bad.

I thought about cutting the top front horn off the make it original but it would look off balance. I think the body looks good the way it is. If you want a 3 per side head stock how about some thing based off the Rick Nielsen Hamer guitar.
