  • Just a little question from an acoustic newbie...

Sometimes ago I bought a beatiful Gibson Songwriter Deluxe, the first acoustic guitar of my life...well, the question is: since I want to tune in drop D, which string gauge I should put on it?

nothing crazy since youre only detuning one string by a whole step, i'd think a standard set of 12's would be fine

Thank you, but for drop D I mean to tune all the strings a whole step down, not only the low E...

If you are mainly going to be strumming chords, I would go with 13's. But if you are going to be playing a lot of leads on it, I would use 12's. If it's going to stay dropped down a whole step, I wouldn't go below 12's regardless. Anything below that would feel (and sound) pretty sloppy...

Yes, it will stay dropped down a whole step. I was asking because, other than the sloppiness, I fear neck torsion. Thank you.

I say 12's also. Most excellent screen name as well!

the term "drop D" specifically refers to just the low E down to D.

what you are doing is tuning to D.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives
