I have made in Korea Vendetta 4.0, which I bought about three or four years ago. For the money, it was a bargain. Neck-thru, mahogany body and mahogany three-piece neck (which I presume is actually Nato), nice thick slab of burled maple on the front with a veneer on the back. It has the small Dean headstock. The neck profile is thin, quite like a Jackson speed neck. Awesome access to the higher frets too. I really like it and would happily recommend one to someone looking for a bargin super-strat.
About the only thing that's obviously cheap on it is the pickups. They don't sound bad, just a little generic. I'm planning to replace them with Blackouts.
However, it hasn't led me to wanting any other Deans. I just happen to think these were over-specced for the price.

I can't speak for imports but my 81 USA Cadillac is all business!
Bought this one new back in the day
- Bound mahoghany body, cherry burst
- Bound V-shaped mahogany neck w/ebony FB and MOP
- Grovers
- Zebra DMZ SD
Not much touches it for feel and sound

I had an early 80's Z in black with creme binding. I loved the V shaped neck and the headstock didn't really bother me. I never should have sold it. I haven't tried the new USA stuff, but they're probably very good. May have to check them out again.

You know that's because Dime had wrapped tape around the neck pickup in his lightening bolt ML, right?

I've got three right now and love EACH of them. They're all the '79 Blueburst special editions. Right now I have the ML, Caddy, and the Z - all MIK (I wasn't as impressed with the Chinese built guitars though). I'll be picking up the last of the series - the V soon. As far as bang for the buck, in the sub-$600 range, it's tough to beat these. Excellent quality and playability, and even the stock pickups (the zebra ones anyway) sound pretty good - I don't know if I'll be replacing them. I will be replacing the gold-covered one in my Caddy though.
I used to HATE the headstocks too (and mine are the Series 2 which a larer than normal), but a buddy of mine was using them, and I started to notice how badass they looked on stage. I tried a couple out, and low & behold, I have a rack full of them! The Blueburst is just an AWESOME finish too, and looks exceptional with the cream binding. Mine all have block inlays, full binding, and good hardware. This is at least on par with Epi's higher end stuff. I love the way they feel/balance/play. Nice guitars all in all.
