A few years ago there was a bridge that could be added on that basically did the same thing. It had an LED readout and could be used to have tons of personal tunings plus all the alternate tuning most used. That by itself was $5000. I don't know what ever happened to the idea, but it looks like Gibson noticed it at some point.

Here we go after some searching here is the bridge I was talking about. Seems to be a more complicated piece of equipment.

The system the Gibson is using seems to be something called Powertune, that can be purchased and retrofitted to guitars for about $800.

Maybe you could hot-rod it to so some sweet fixed-bridge dive bombs?

I'm of two minds on this. Part of me is thinking: 1) Now if they can design one that will transmit the thoughts in my head to the strings and continously fill my bank acount with money, I'll pay whatever they ask. 2) If I can't be bothered to tune my own guitar I have no business playing one.

I'll bet that in 10 years $230 Ibanez's will have this, and it constantly
corrects the tuning every 30 seconds.. and like the old Fretlight...
actually shows you note for note...what Vai is playing! Once they
get this technology down, and make it cheap...why not have an auto-
tuner on every axe? I was born 40 years too early dammit!!

"Do you have more money than sense? Are you too dumb and cloth-eared to tune your guitar properly? For just the price of a small car, Gibson has the answer..."

That's pretty neat. You could change tunings in a few seconds rather than keeping another guitar around.

My question is: can they make it work on a Floyd?

Here's a clip of Page using the early transperformance one during what I think is the last Page/Plant tour in '98:
Jimmy Page and Robert Plant in Toronto 1998

Around 3:20 he engages the thing for detune, then goes theramin crazy!

As an aside, when I first moved to Boston in '95 GC had a similar purple LP with this system, that was sitting out at ground level getting the crap kicked out of it by everybody. It easily was the most expensive LP in there, maybe in the whole store..what a waste!

I don't think the power Gibson's tuning can be changed on the fly. You still have to intonate the guitar, which if you watch the video has to be done by hand.

The transperformance one is the one that can be used in a live situation. If you play alot of live tunes in different tunings, that thing would be bad ass.

                            That would be cool!

Not on Floyd (yet?) but they do have a bridge for Strat trems:

It's interesting. I wonder how much more weight there is at the headstock end. Like everything these will get cheaper and smaller over time.
