  • rare fender question

Has anyone played a fender performer? they sold them for one year in 1986 and i have not seen many around, so my concern is there is a reason for it. they were made in Japan and a 24 fret which is not like fender so that in it self may be why they discontinued it, or it sounds like poop. i have a chance to buy one, but i really don't want to piss away the money this time of year. anyone?

I had 3 of them before getting into J/C.. now I still have a sunburst.. I think they are great personally, except for the bridge.

btw, they killed the Performer when CBS pulled the plug on Fender.

If you don't want it, point it out for me

well, it looks like no other fender. So, I'm thinking the design is a a tad bit too radical for the "fender-minded".

they could have made it work with a more normal pickguard and pickups (and the headstock). It reminds me something I did in paint to a warrior that I'm gonna post on here when I get around to it.

It's like the B.C. Rich of Fenders. I like the body shape but that's about it.

Fender should make a Jackson with that shape and rearload it.

                  I humbly disagree.

These have the same knobs and the pickups look similar to the early 80's Fender Elites....

I don't know if this bridge is the Freeflyte or the first generation of it...it didn't do too well, even though it was designed and built by Schaller in Germany for the Elite's and the Elite Gold's.

Looks like a reject for the Bill & Ted guitars they get from Rufus.

thanks for the insight. the guy wants $350 or OBO. i may just do it as it seems Japan Fenders have gone up in value. i guess they are a split coil so you can get the strat and heavy sound out of them.

The bodys real cool, but the headstock probly put some people off.

Something to think about: for less than $350 ( I paid 150!)you could get a MIJ Jackson PS4 HSH configuration and a bridge that can be replaced with a Schaller with no mods and pickups that can be replaced too, if you buy you are stuck with those unless you want to throw some duncans in the oven and try to twist them into that shape!
