  • New Guitar Day!

The last couple of bands I have been in use drop tunings, either standard a full step down or drop D. It sounds cool, but I hate setting up my favorite guitar for it and then want to play some tunes in standard in my spare time. The solution? A 7 string. I've had the Schecter BJ for about a year, and it has served me well... but I wanted a trem. It was a toss up between the Loomis and the Ibenhad RG1527. I went with the Ibenhad because I wanted to try a 25.5 7 and I'm glad I did. It kicks ass! I knew going in that the stock pickups were crap, so I was able to get a Dimarzio Blaze for the bridge and popped it in within an hour of getting the guitar. I have a Blaze neck pickup on order. Now for the crappy pictures... I was jamming through the Recto tonight so I thought I get a pic of the new Ibenhad and the Schecter together Now I just need to learn some Korn songs...

Put in an rsguitarworks pot upgrade kit it WILL smoke then.
I did and upgrade on one of those Mon of this week and it rocked. I mean tons of low end and no mud even with stock pickups. It takes a lot to impress me and this one did

I've been curious to try one of those... Seriously, is it worth the money?

If it is as good as everyone says, then I will have to try it.

How do you like the neck shape on that compared to a Schecter 7?
I recently picked up a Loomis myself and it kills!

I love it, the neck feels a little slimmer than the hellraiser or blackjack neck.
I've always wanted to try a 1527/7620 but I hate skinny wizard
          necks so I never bothered.

so how skinny is the neck on this thing?

it's nice to have one 7 with a 25.5 scale and one with a 26.5 scale isn't it?
I love going back and forth between the Loomis and my Carvin 7
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

The Ibanez is a really great quality guitar. It is easily on par with the RG3120 I had. I've got the action really low and there is no buzzing. It was set up pretty well from the factory, except that they shimmed the locking nut too much... Why do manufacturers always do this? The whole guitar vibrates when you hit chords, and it has great sustain. I would definitely recommend upgrading the pickups though the stock ones aren't TOO bad. They lack in definition a bit... I think they are too scooped in mids. Compared to the Schecter, the Ibanez is a bit easier to play, but I think it is more due to the scale than the neck thickness. Thick necks don't bother me all that much. For comparison sake, the Schecter has more "shoulder" than the Ibanez, and it a tad thicker. The frets on the Schecter are a bit wider and taller as well. I'm much like you in that I do not like 6 string Wizard necks. For a seven though, this profile works IMO.

I've been gassing for that Loomis since I heard out that is was coming out. I probably should've gotten it back then, but I didn't want to spend $900 on my first seven string, so I got the BJ instead. For $599, it is a great value and a solid guitar. Anyway, I think RG's are sexy, so I went for the Ibanez this time around. The scale was a big factor too. The baritone scale sounds a bit "twangy" to me and bending strings is a little more difficult (though not too much so).

Question... One of things that scared me away from the Loomis was that the BJ feels a bit "plasticky". Does the Loomis have a similar feel? One thing I really dig about the Ibenhad is that is feels really "woody" if that makes sense. More organic or something...

so Steveo...please don't tell me your haning them down below the knee-caps just banging on de-tuned 5 chords with no single note solos? Is the art of the solo dead to you now ....lol

              j/k nice score

are you kidding? I have to wear those things John Petrucci style to play anything

Seriously though, 7's give you a ton of options since you can get that low rumble and still play stuff in standard. I hate messing with tunings, especially with trem equipped guitars. 7's are a challenge for me too... not that I'm even all that great on 6. My picking hand gets confused sometimes.

I think anyone would dig a seven string. You should try one. The Schecter BJ's (like the black one above) are great guitars and very resonably priced. I can't even imagine what a seven string would sound like through that VHT of yours.

"Plasticky" is a perfect way to describe how the BlackJack felt to me as
well. I've owned a Hellraiser 7 , a Blackjack 7 and now the Loomis and
the Loomis is by far the best out of the Schecter 7 line. It feels like a
$1,200.00 guitar (easy). I loved how the BJ sounded but it felt cheap to
me and I could never exactly nail what it was , but "plasticky" is a good way to describe it.
The Loomis I have plays just as well as my Carvin does, and my Carvin has
taken over as my #1 guitar. I play everything on that now.
My 6 string guitars just sit in their cases these days. With the BareKnuckle
pickups I've got in the Carvin I get a huge range of tonal possibilities, so I
play VH, Greg Howe, Vinnie Moore , Yngwie, Nevermore, Planet X, Dream
Theater, Racer X etc on it. I made myself get used to the 7 by playing all the 6
string stuff on it and now it just feels like a "normal" guitar to me.
If you ever get a chance to check out a Loomis do it, I ordered mine thru
GC, cancelled the order (but they sent it anyway) so when it came in, the
sales rep called me and said "it's here if you want to check it out".
I figured I have the 30 days to return it ,so I took it home
(he gave me a good price on it too, I think he just wanted it out of the
store) and I like more everytime I play it.
it sounds great thru my JSX.
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

First off, stop saying good things about the Loomis Schecter... I've spent enough money! I think it is a great value with EMG's and a real Floyd. Believe me, it was a tough decision.

You are right on the money about the 7 String/JSX combo. The BJ was easily my best sounding guitar through that amp.

I've been doing the exact same thing... using the 7 string as I would any other guitar, playing the usual stuff. Its nice to have the option of writing in D, F#, C#, E, A, and B (I use pedal tones alot). I like to transpose things from the 6 string to the 7 too. It gives it a meaner edge when you drop it down like that.

so how do you like the Recto compared to the JSX?
here's what I got going on at home "7wise"

I like Rectos. I gigged with a single for about two years or so prior to getting the dual, so I'm used to dealing with their quirks. It is much tougher to get a defined tone out of it than the JSX, especially with the 7 string. Mids are your friend haha. I'm not the biggest JSX fan in the world, but one things for sure... they are very clear, no tweaking necessary. You can get defined tones out of the Recto, you just have to work for it more. I also like how the highs are thicker sounding with the Boogie. That was my biggest complaint about the JSX... The high mids - highs were a bit thin.

That Carvin is sweet! I priced a Carvin 7 string about a week ago and the $1300 price tag scared me off. I'm sure they are worth it though. That thing looks like a high quality guitar for sure. I see you dumped the stock pickups though... how come?

the stock pickups were good for fusiony type of stuff but not really
good metal pickups , and I sure as hell didn't buy a 7 to play fusion.
they were too thin sounding for metal.
The Bareknuckles I have in there (Nailbomb at the bridge/Coldsweat at
the neck) are much thicker and more versatile, so now I can pretty much play
anything on it. These BKS really sing, great sounding pickups.
It's a great guitar, Carvin really out did themselves on this one.
the neck is super comfy, (tung oiled) Stainless steel frets all mahogany under that insane quilt. It's a great guitar.
