Pre drilling the holes is a great way to prevent paint chipping when you do final assembly.
And you should NEVER wet sand a guitar. It should always be done dry or with a light mineral oil.
Just change your paper often and blow the dust of the body between paper changes.
Well, I've done about 30 guitars so far and had no problems with wet sanding. This is why I don't drill any holes and I keep the neck pocket masked until I'm done wet sanding. Mineral oil works Ok on nitro, but not well on poly urethane. Mineral oil will also seep into the grain quicker than water because of it's low viscosity. I wet sand using plenty of water from 800 grit all the way up to 3200 grit using micropapers soaked in water before I use them.
For holes through the paint, ie; Strap buttons, pickguard screws, I spot face with a brad point cutting bit the same way Fender does using a drill press. No chips. It's a much cleaner way to do the job.
Here's a great article from the "man" Dan Erlewine on body finishing using wet sanding.
it looks great, but didn't the scoops have a recess to go with them as well...they seem kind of reduntant to a non recessed FR?? i thought vai's had the recess too?

Not the early one as this one represents. Vai actually used a screw driver and a hammer to chisel away the areas below the string locking bolts. The full recess did not come till much later after he sanded the lower cut away. This method is much cleaner than the screw driver technique.

That does look very cool, Tim. That Heavy Blues you'll have in the middle is a cool pickup. I have one in the neck slot on one of my Jacksons and it's great.
A little off topic, but I wish I would have had the cash to take that scalloped Grosh Retro off your hands a few weeks ago. I hope it went to a good home that will appreciate what a great guitar that one is.
