7's are still being used a plenty, just thank god they are being used as
    guitars instead of basses.
guys like Petrucci, Loomis, Broderick, Smythe, Andy James , Tony Mcalpine,
Vai, Dave Weiner, Tom Kopyto are all doing really cool stuff with them.
    I've got 2, a Schecter Loomis sig, and a Carvin DC727, and I play those 2
more than I play my Jackson Sl2H or my GMW's these days. Even if I'm
playing 6 string stuff I'll use my Carvin because it's such a nice playing
guitar and I've got Bareknuckle pickups in it which totally kick ass.

Schecter has a few 7 string models out, but if you want a floyd
it's going to be the Loomis. (there is a hellraiser 7 with a floyd coming
though). the C-7 floyds are out but those are cheapo guitars.
Ibanez still has a couple of 7 string models besides the Universe
and you can get them with floyds or without.

Personally speaking my Carvin 7 is the best playing 7 I've come across
yet, hell it's one of the best playing guitars I've come across ...period,
    6 or 7 strings.
As Ken stated head on over to

The guys over there are all cool and very helpful (lots of Jackson fans
over there too) Jackson would do well to put out a production model 7
string USA soloist with a floyd. they'd sell plenty of them.
I know if I had a 7 string version of my SL2H , I don't know if I'd even look any other 7 string guitars

These are my two : Loomis on the left (26.5 scale),
    Carvin on the right.
They both sound great thru my JSX set up.

some good 7 string songs with some serious shredding in each one.

All of the really heavy bands still detune to B or lower. Most of them use six string guitars setup to deal with the tuning instead of seven stringers.

The seven string sensation struck me as more of a numetal phenomenon or for guys into progy metal.

Thanks guys for all your opinions ive never played limp bizkit slipknot or anything like that tat i bought one years ago when steve vai's passion & warefare came out but due to there not being any other main bands out at that time using 7's for say metal i got tired of just shredding to steve vai & got rid of the ibanez universe i had & believe me in 91 they were bloody expensive . My main influence with regards to 7 strings from there debut album has been nevermore jeff loomis only really changed over to 7's on the dreaming neon black album & from then the riffs have been awesome all because of that extra B string also another great 7 string band is scar symmetry i recommend you guys check them out very brutal & melodic not really like anything else out there. Well as for what to purchase im gonna wait for winter NAMM to see what turns up i would like an ESP as there great guitars & they suit the reverse headstock more than others im quite partial to schecter now never ever thought of looking at these guitars before but alot of them do look quite awesome. As for ibanez not to keen on any of there models they have at the moment i did see dino cazares using the new ibanez xiphos shape in a 7 string version it had reverse headstock floyd rose too looked pretty cool

Hey kmanick, I never congratulated you on getting the Loomis. It looks sweet, even if it doesn't have the same bling factor as your 727. It sounds like you're enjoying the new pickups. I hope you didn't have to do too much routing to get the new pickups into the Carvin. Incidentally, do you find the longer scale on the Schecter makes much difference to the tone?*

*Ken sees the scale length as a good excuse to buy yet another guitar, like an RG7EXFX2.

Dino's 7-string Xiphos is a one off LACS guitar (L.A. Custom Shop, for endorsers only). It doesn't mean there'll be a production version, but there is a rumour that there will be one, so I think you're right to wait 'till after NAMM.

Schecter and ESP are owned by the same parent company, incidentally, even though they're seperate entities.

Whatever you buy, be sure to post some pictures after you get it.

Andy James is one of my favorites right now.
His CD "In the Wake of Chao" has some great stuff on it.

Thanks Ken, I found the 26.5 scale real easy to get use to.
The only difference I hear in tone is that the lower end
                  stuff is a little tighter.
Your Jackson is smoking, if it had a floyd on it I'd be chasing you for it
This Schecter Loomis has turned out to be a surprisingly cool guitar.
I ended up getting it for a good price and I had a $300.00 credit
on my GC card so it was almost a gift.

I had my luthier/tech put the Bareknuckles in the Carvin, he's a great
tech, looking at the guitar you would think it came with those size
routes, he didn't touch the top at all. I just wish we could get those BKs's
cheaper here in the states, they really sing, great sounding pickups.
That Carvin has also been a huge surprise to me.
This is the first Carvin I've ever played (nevermind owned)
and everytime I pick it, up it puts a huge smile on my face.

From that one picture, it's clear your Tech did a great job installing the Bareknuckles. They're expensive pickups, but they seem to have a growing following. It would have been a serious shame if he had to cut into that aweswome piece of quilt maple; I'm glad he didn't!

I think you really can't go wrong with either of the mid level Schecters. Both the Hellraiser and the C7 BJ are great, especially for the price. I have a BJ and it has turned out to be a really nice guitar. The biggest problem I have with mine is the nut... The strings get caught up in there sometimes. One of these days, I'm going to get a GraphTech nut and saddles for it. Otherwise it plays and sounds great, and as Kmanick said the 26.5 scale is pretty easy to get used to.

There will definitely be a 7 string Xiphos (XPT-707) in production in '08. That has been confirmed, and isn't a rumor. It will also have a lower list price than the current RG-1527.

From it's name, I presume it will have twin EMG 707s. If it's cheaper than an RG-1527, I guess it will be MIK and have a fixed bridge. Any idea what scale length and colour options will be?

Since it's Ibanez, it will definitely come in black, but sometimes when Ibanez offers two choices of color they're both black It appears to be Korean and fixed bridge as you noted, but I don't know if it's the Edge FX bridge or not yet. No word on the scale length yet either.

I'd guess it will have a 25.5" scale. If it has a 27", I'll have an excuse to buy one. Thanks for the info.
