  • Petrucci Ibanez, 95/96 primary colors

Any personal opinions/experiences with one of these?

I have a line on one, and want to make sure it's something I should be tweaking on.

From what I hear, the Viper neck is somewhat of a religious experience.

Interested in first hand (I played one) opinions.

What do you mean by primary colors? Are we talking about the Petrucci P1 with Picasso graphic? like this one:

If so, mine is one of the earlier P1's as I was told these early ones had the multi colored Dimarzios in them. Its a cool guitar but I much prefer the Petrucci EBMM which is a much higher quality guitar than the Ibanez. Anyway, I have both of those and I'm not a huge fan of the Ibanez necks myself, I much prefer the Jackson style necks Are you looking at buying an Ibanez Petrucci P1? They are somewhat scarce and highly sought after.

Yes, primary colors vs. the black/white, gray/blue, or camo units they made.
The one I'm looking at looks just like yours.

I like the Ibanez necks, but understand that the Viper neck on these is just a bit different feeling...

I've also read some reviews where people say that they are more toneful than the average Ibanez... good for all styles of music, etc.

The one guitar I've held onto for over 20 years now is an Ibanez..., so I guess I'm a fan of the necks, at least the custom shop necks.

      Sweet looking axe brother!

They're great guitars. As mentioned, it's not as excellently built as the EBMM guitar (especially fretwork), but they're great instruments. At least You know, when You own this guitar, You can positively absolutely not blame the equipment

IIRC, the necks are a bit more rounded, like a JS neck. Not flat like a Wizard...

They are wired different, which may explain the different tones. The middle switch is either the outside or inside coils of each hum active. I think it's the outside ones. But not sure. So you get the neck and the bridge and a nice single coil settings in a 3 way...

I think they are pretty sweet. But I agree with the rest, they don't match up to the EBMM Models...

            Thanks for the thoughts Gentlemen!
Well, in spite of the sweet deal, I couldn't buy it.
I told her to list it on craigslist for what its really worth.
She was asking stupid money for it (stupid cheap), and I would never have been able to look at it in good conscience.
Her husband passed away, and about all she's got is his gear.

Wow. Someone with morals. I didn't think any more existed...

Nice way to handle that. You have some serious good karma coming your way...

Would be interested to know what she was asking for it though...

Maybe point her to jemsite too...

Well, things worked out in such a way that spikey got the Petrucci after all.
As it turns out, the seller got a bit more for it, and didn't have to deal with craigslist or ebay, and is happy... plus I'm buying some other goodies off her so I can keep my morals intact.

                The buyer is happy too.
This is a very cool guitar, and a bit different than I expected.
Yes, to the more rounded neck, as Bengal suggested but really not much like my custom shop old Ibanez that's been attached to my left arm for 20+ years.
I'm not sure about the quality being inferior to EBMM, or anything else...
I've probably had my hands on 2000 different guitars over the past 35 years, and don't remember one having a more quality feel, better fretwork or otherwise (A quick scan of some of the other forums indicates that this is a never-ending argument, so I'll leave it at that...)
Perhaps I'll need one of each to be absolutely sure huh, Gryphon? hehehe!

Now that I see it in person, it's clearly a P2 (which is the pastel color scheme, not the P1 which has the primary colors), with a serial number low enough to indicate it must have been a transition model, since most P2's don't have a P1-ish serial number like mine.

Pics will be forthcoming shortly... she deserves more than cell phone pics, so it will have to wait just a bit.

Other than two small dingers on the back, it's absolutely mint.
No fret-wear, etc... nothing to detract or distract from the joy!

                Thanks Uncle Al!

Nice axe. I had a p4 (camo) for a while. I didn't like the pickups, body, neck or bridge I just don't think these things give a good distortion tone, but Petrucci did, so what do I know
I feel festive all year round. Deal with it.

                        I hear ya lev.
Hey, a lot of it is in the technique, the rig, blah blah blah
Who the heck knows how many Mesa MKII-C+ combos JP had to run in series to achieve his tone, right?
Hell, if I had unlimited funds, and could do it, I could play non-rusty Van Hagar licks on a toothbrush with dental floss for strings.
                        hehe
                        Hey, that's almost quote worthy.
Prolly better than my normal sig line.

Should be the inner coils, that's what John likes for his clean tones. It's a special DiMarzio switch. I bought one from them awhile ago and put it in my Carvin.

No, it actually belonged to a buddy of mine and he left it with me for 7 months when he was in the army. I gigged with it once or twice.

Sorry, that post sounded a bit harsh! No offence meant. I just means to say that I didn't think it was a heavy metal guitar. The cleans were sparkling, especially with the coil tap thingy. Go hard rock on it and the pickups work miracles, but when you push it over the top and go into modern metal territory it didn't cut it. The neck shape didn't agree with me but that's just personal preference. One thing I wonder is, why do they use basswood on top level guitars? The body could've been more resonant, but maybe I had a dud. What are your impressions?

I find basswood very resonant so your's might have been a dud Lev...

A lot of "big" artists use basswood. I also think it's quite plentiful in Asia. I seem to remember reading something like that. So maybe thats why it's used alot...

I like basswood myself. Nice and snappy...
