  • My Epi LP ZW came in, lightly damaged. WWYD?

Well, upon opening up the case, my Epiphone Zakk Wylde Les Paul came in slightly damaged.

This is not a high cost guitar(to me) so I wasn't really planning on doing anything. Other than having my tech pop some glue where it's needed and clamp it down. The cracks don't bother me really.

My brother in law and a few other friends feel differently. They said I should show it to U.P.S. and file a claim.

    Here are the pics:
    Bad stuff first:

    The axe:

It'll take some getting used to. This thing has tree trunk strings on it and it needs to have the frets lightly touched up and set up to my liking. Really nice tone though whether clean or distorted. I tuned it and played it through the silver jube with the GT-6 in front for a while.

Feedback is welcome on whether I should try to get $ back, or let it be and shred the hell out of it. I'd be far more upset if this we're a $2000. Charvel. I really wasn't bothered by it!

it depends, was it advertised as new?

if the problems were described, then its cool, but if these are just there.

suck as much as you can out of it

I like my guitars minty so that would bother me. And if you ever consider selling it, that might turn off a number of potential buyers and/or require a price drop.

Agreed. A $200 guitar would be cheap to me, but if it came beat up, it would go back. I don't mind to infer you're someone with more money than they know what to do with, but there is no excuse for that damage.

If it was insured you should file a claim. I bought a Jackson (DK2)from a store on ebay and it was damaged like yours. Called UPS and they paid the cost of the guitar to the seller. Seller then sent me a new guitar so I ended up with 2 guitars and the seller had 2 sales out of the deal. The seller did try to get the damaged guitar from me but I was told by UPS that I was under no obligation to return it (i guess because UPS paid for it after they damaged it) so I told the seller it was discarded. Glued the bad neck. End of story

this was used, and advertised as such.

the damage was done in shipping as i have seen pics of this guitar and those blems weren't there.

i'll keep you guys posted. thanks for your feedback.

IMO, you should file a claim against UPS on point of principle. How many more instruments will they destroy before finally getting the idea they need to handle these properly. Financial penalty to the company is the only way it`ll get better for everyone.

cracks in those areas make me a little nervous. i'd pop the nut off and see if the fretboard is lifted off of the neck. like you've already mentioned, it's a glue job. i'd glue it up and forget about it.

If it was damaged in transit, definetely file a claim. Those guys should take more care when carrying things - I sold a digital SLR camera a couple of weeks ago and the postmen managed to drop it or something too. It really enrages me - how hard is it to be careful with people's packages for god sake?

Although, to be honest - that first pic especially - how could that happen in the post? Could it be possible it was already damaged when the seller sent it, but the photos you originally saw of it were taken BEFORE it was damaged?

it's very possible if the guitar was dropped, headstock going perpendicular into the ground. if there's not a lot of room around the headstock or the guitar was overpacked, the guitar can shift and break itself in the case.

My brother worked at UPS for a summer once. He said they were told to just toss them into the truck, because if they took time to place it there carefully, they wouldn't move near as many units in a day and it would cost more. Sad I know. I only shipped UPS once out of desperation, and would not do it again. guitar got there alright, but I was biting my nails the whole time.

Send it back. Any sort of neck damage like that automatically goes back. I have a Charvel coming, via UPS right now, and I'm biting my nails, cause I know, first-hand, what those ham-fisted morons are capable of.
