  • PRS Modern Eagle lands at Chez Crank

After a blockbuster trade that makes the Johan Santana to Mets deal look puny by comparision, I recently took ownership of a 2005 PRS Modern Eagle.

For those of you who might not be wise in the ways of PRS (like me), the Modern Eagle is a guitar that sells new for about 6000 bucks at Sweetwater. (I just looked it up) It's about as close to a PRS PRivate Stock guitar as you can get. Nothing but the finest woods, 10 top, SOLID BRAZILIAN ROSEWOOD NECK AND FINGERBOARD, bird inlays, thin nitro finish, suede case, yadda yadda yadda.

Basically, it is a piece of art.

It looks incredible. It feels AMAZING (do yourself a favor and try a Brazilian neck sometime). And it sounds rich, and full, and meaty, and sweet, and articulate.

It is for these very reasons that I will never play this guitar. Mind you, I'm definitely a "guitars should be played, not displayed' kind of guy. And I've lived that mantra, playing out live with some pretty pricey GMPs. But this thing...this is different. I'm a card-carrying barre chord flogger, and this thing was meant to sing.

So, I shall play the humble steward for this fine instrument, and keep it safe and happy and warm until such time as she moves on. I'll probably take it out of it's suede-encased home every now and again to gaze upon her beauty and strum a few chords, but that's about it.

I know I'll get lots of "f-that, dude...I'd play the thing!" posts after this one, but trust me. You'd feel different if you were in my position.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. A few photos for your viewing pleasure. They do NOT do this guitar justice.

Definitely a beautiful PRS. I love the headstock inlay. The finish nicely highlights the top, too.
Takeoffs are optional but landings are mandatory.

From what I hear on the B.A.M forum PRS has stopped producing these indefinately. It seems they are having problems getting some quality wood for these guitars. It may be a good idea to keep it as minty as you can, since it may be worth much more in the future.
              Damn, I love this Interweb.

its could be getting hard to find brazilian rosewood in big enough peices to make necks with. AFAIK it cant be harvested anymore & whats available is all older stock. IIRC it was around 96 that it was put on the endangered species list.
