If you are worried about resale value, stay way from Hamer, Carvin and Heritage. Shit resale value on all of them...

My vote is for PRS. I wouldn't give money to Gibson now if my life depended on it...
      I'm angry because you're stupid

If you're not stuck on a Gibson or PRS and want a slightly different take on the Les Paul shape, the ESP Eclipse IIs on closeout are a great deal:

Don't get a Les Paul, so that you can always wonder "would of, could of, should of".

PRS does nothing for me. I don't like LP wannabes either.

I have 4 LP's, but I agree, do your homework and get a good one. Get a good deal on it to, because if you decide it's not for you, it will be hard to sell if you pay full retail.

Do you like a thin neck with high output pickups? Get an LP Classic.
Do you like vintage tone? Get a Standard with either a thin 60s or thicker 50s neck.
If you like a baseball bat neck, you might just barely be able to score a historic R7 Goldtop used.

I highly suggest you go to the lespaulforum and do some homework before spending $1500 on a guitar you might be unsure of.

I love the PRS single cuts. More comfortable than a LP, more unique, great quality.

As far as Carvin resale my first CT6 I bought new for 1400 and sold it last year for 1200 so that's not so bad IMO. And my second CT6 I was able to get a 14" radius, tung oil neck finish, SS frets, Birdseye board, the HS the way I wanted it, and specify what kinda flame I was looking for all for 15 and some change. It only took like 2 months too. Definitely one of the best deals out there IMO.

If it's an investment, it has to be Gibson. PRS is probably ok there too.

If you are a player, PRS is probably a better guitar. Mojo - Gibson.

My choice if I wanted an LP is a used Heritage, or maybe a Hamer Monaco elite. I'd like to find a 25.5" scale maple/mahog LP neck through in the LP Custom trim, but I dunno.

For investment and buying new, not used you are probably stuck with PRS or Gibson - others don't hold up in resale, but it's great to buy them used!

Buy used and get what ever suits you best . I don't like the way PRS necks are square as they join the body it fells cheap.

PRS Hands Down ... but ... Like Fat Necks?

I hate 'em. But if you do, a SC or SCT are both great choices (no WT available) and you should have no trouble finding a nice one in your price range. If not, the Tremonti WT neck w/trem is killer though I haven't seen any showing up at your price ... yet. Bottom line is PLAY a BUNCH of THEM and then decide. If nothing strikes your fancy ... WAIT. I went through all the fat baseball neck PRS hell (SC's, SCT's, HBI's and II's) until I finally bit the bullet and got my new one: SCT with solid RW neck re-profiled to just a hair under a WT by PRS Private Stock shop. 1 11/16 - 10' radius. Zebra hum's 3way w/coil tap. Vintage LP vibe (and lots more) + trem + kick ass smooth thin neck ... if Charvel made one I swear this would be what came out of the pipes ... 'cept maybe with a Floyd !! S-O-M

If your'e looking to play it and play it hard, find a les paul that's right for you, plenty of used ones out there in good shape for a good price. If you want something to admire and something you have to be careful with, get a prs:ROTF: they look like shit beat up. You wont beat the tone of a les paul that's got a little mojo in it.

Me beat up a PRS ... you talkin' to me ????

Damn Mark - does this mean I can't do a "Townsend" with at least one of 'em??? What's this world coming to !!! But you know my motto "If ya can't afford to break it, ya probably shouldn't buy it." Guess I'll have to wait til PRS comes out with the really expensive "hoity-toity" RELIC'd guitars (you know the kind that have already been beaten to hell, left out in the rain and otherwise generally abused before you buy 'em) before I haul off and pull a Limp Bizkit and "BREAK SHIT" !!!! S-O-M Rides Again!!
