  • Got a NOS Epi X-1000 Today

Pics to come. This one is NOS. As some of you may know, the later versions of these had Steinberger KB tremolos, which had a fatal flaw; the trem posts could bend, rendering the trem useless, and Gibosn hung the dealers out to dry when trying to get them fixed. Thank goodness it has a lock function on them though.

    Specs:
    H-S-S (EMG Select Pickups)
Volume and tone Control w/ Coil Tap
3 on/off switches (which raises the question why put the coil tap on the Tone Control?)
    Ebonol Finger Board
    MOP Chevron Inlays
    24 Fret neck through construction
    Maple neck and wings
White Pearl (which has very gently yellowed slightly)

Now for the price: $200 w/ tax! The guy wanted it gone, and gone it was. Max Bluebook on these is $350 (Which is for a Near Mint example, as there are no Mint ones due to the trem issues). Only one small mark on it by the trem. The rest just needs a nice cleaning. Not too bad for early Korean construction, though the paint applications were a whee bit sloppy in spots. You could say it's a fett-like deal

The EMG Selects aren't bad pickups either. They have a fair amount of chunk and bite to them. The guitar is fairly heavy, probably due to the maple construction. It plays really smooth, with crazy harmonics. The neck is similar to a Model 6 in terms of profile, though I think its slightly thinner. The body is shaped more like a Kramer than a Charvel though. Overall, very nice playing and sounding guitar. I got it as a beater, and I'd say I did better than I thought I would. I must say the trem is a bit of a disappointment, but I wonder if I could have new posts machined from hardened steel. It would be ashame to waste the trem, which is pretty brilliant in design otherwise (has a lock function and springless tension control, plus very precise height control)

I just got rid of my s900 that guitar was the next level down from the x-1000 but with 21 rosewood frets and sharkfin inlays (crazy for a Gibson). Great sounding guitar.

I actually saw a x-1000 with a Kahler Flyer on it so now I'm hunting for a x-1000 to mangle.
