What truth are you referring to? I rarely bitch about GC. And while I do have the occasional lame experience there why should that preclude me from shopping there? Why shouldn't I take my friend there when normally they are the best store around for him to get a $400 guitar? I've stated on a number of occasions that I've gotten great service and deals at GC. Please explain what I've done that suggests I've done wrong by a friend.

Well, you went there with the thought in mind of a MIM Strat. You didn't like any of them. But for reasons that can be corrected. You didn't mention any huge build issues or shoddy workmanship. Just needed some cleaning, some humidity and a set up. But instead of doing that for him you settled with a Squire. A much more low budget guitar. That's the first guy. I'm not saying you did anything wrong there but you settled a bit in my book...

So the next time this comes up you go back there. It sounds like it was a different store, but maybe it wasn't. I don't know. But you go back there again knowing that GC has some magical warehouse that sucks all the humidity out of guitars. But you go back there thinking it will be different. Guess what? It wasn't. And you got idiots that didn't know shit about jack. So then you get another idea to go somewhere else where you find a good guitar. It just so happens that it's not called Guitar Center...

If I was your friend, I would have wondered why we went back there in the first place. I go to a place for dinner, the food sucks, I don't go back. But that's me. So I don't think you did anything wrong by your friend...

Well, you concluded that I wouldn't take care of my buddy by fixing up the Squier. I didn't think discussing how I offered to take it home and oil the neck, humidify it, dress the frets, etc. was particularly relevant to my so-called bitch. But since you asked, I did offer. He saw the Squier and asked what I thought so I plugged it in and played it. It was ready to go and a very suitable guitar for his son to get started with.

When he mentioned he wanted to get a guitar for himself I suggested we go to the other GC (the Raleigh store if you were reading along). The assumption being that maybe they didn't get guitars from the same batch and/or they've addressed the issues. Also, the Raleigh store has a better overall selection of guitars - particularly used. He wasn't tied to the idea of getting a Fender so the better selection seemed like a good thing. Regarding the Fenders, as it turns out I was wrong - they seemed to have gotten a similar batch. As for the rest of the selection, he tried out a bunch more than he could have at the Durham store.

So just to clarify this, if you have a lame experience at a store/restaurant you will no longer do business there even if you had many quite acceptable experiences there over many years?

I thought you had went to another GC, it read that way. But you found out the exact same thing. Then you go to another shop and find a guitar that's ready to go. Should have saved you some time and called him up first thing...

As for going back after a lame experience, no I don't. I really don't if it's a chain store. If it's a local shop I give the benifit of the doubt but chain stores get none from me. But how would I know that you have had a grand old time there before this? The first post doesn't read like that...

Screw GC AND Sam Ash. I get most of my guitars through pawn shops. Sure, it takes a bit of looking, but you'll come away with bitchin' stuff for almost no money.

Example- I just picked up a virtually-unplayed (until I got my hands on it, that is) Korean-made Epiphone Sheraton II, circa early 90's, in natural. It was SO clean that the frets had absolutely NOTHING in terms of wear. In fact, the only issues it had were some wearing-away of the bridge pickup cover (gold plated) and some small cracks on the neck binding (and THAT was because they put the binding over the fret ends, which had pushed out over time). Other than that, it's an almost perfect guitar.

And I paid $175 for it, too.

Sure, eBay has totally screwed up the used instrument market, and a lot of pawn shop dudes will often use the "that's what they're going for on eBay" excuse to justify their abnormally-high prices. But if you try to be friendly, don't show yourself as too eager, and asked what their "best" price is (their sticker price is NEVER the actual asking price), you'll be surprised as to what you can find.

I'd put up my pawn shop finds up against ANY GC/Sam Ash purchases. And, unlike GC/Sam Ash, pawn shop finds have MOJO, which is a plus for any musician.

So, hippietim, I would only suggest that us little common shoppers/players/musicians
are simply not in "HIS" league.

I can fully agree, it's, Wal Mart sucks, but damn, we sometimes get great deals there.
Not to throw out the big boner that I had a brief experiment of a music store, but I still
get business from a local store that acts like GC, where they don't bother to setup their guitars, forget about repairs, and whatnot. But, guess what? I still go there to see if there's anything worth picking up. And they still get a bit of my business, like it or not. I'm not so immature that I'll boycott someone completely because they "sucK".
So, I'm with you, they suck, but there's ways around it. Even within the store.
