So i guess you guy's approve of the new Chambering Gibson has implemented on all USA production Les Pauls? I recently got a Classic Custom Silverburst and found the tone very diffrent then that of my 83 LPC. The new LP's are pretty much hollowed out and filled with some sort of lightweight filler. Over on the LP Forum they have posted a few Xray photo's of these. I found the tone somw what lacking in the Balls dept. Too bright and no upper mids like my LPC. It seemed great for the blues or Jazz but would most likly need a pick up swap for hard rock and distorted tones.

I haven't spent any appreciable amount of time with an older LP but both of my standards have a lot of chunky low-end. They sound a lot like other LPs I've heard. That being said, I always heard the Norlin era LPs had some problems as well. I really think it's subjective with subtle differences existing between the various makes of LPs. I'd love to try out an older one, however.

The chambering is not really all that new. I heard they've been doing it for quite a long time on certain LPs (more than 10 years), but just haven't been telling anybody. Mine's an '04, so most likely it's chambered, but I'm not sure. It does sound really good either way. It's also got a mahogany top instead of maple, so that would attribute to its chunky sound as well.

The Chambering of the Gibson production LP's began in 2007 except for the Cloud 9's. Because of the negative response from alot of playes and the large number of guitars returned to the big chain stores with the same reason being a change in tone, the word from some Gibson reps is that the chambering will be going away and they will be going back to the swiss cheese weight relief holes in the near future. The Silver burst I have is a beautiful guitar and came from the factory with 0 finish flaws and great fret work. It simply lacks some of the low tones I was hoping to get.
