I was visiting one of my local credit card rapers today and saw this strat and tried her out. 08 Highway One Fat Strat in a triburst finish. I really don't care one way or the other about the satin finish, but the neck played really nice and I am a sucker for a big 70's headstock. The stock pickups are pretty hot and sounded great through a Marshall DSL combo I used to try it out on. I like the fact that the lower tone knob is for the bridge pickup, I always thought that was a vintage strats weakest point. They also have that greasebucket circuitry, but I didn't pay too much attention in the store to how that worked. As long as they roll the highs off, I am cool.
I was really surprised how nice the guitar played. I jammed a little Rainbow, some Little Feat, Trower and Hendrix on it and it just played so nicely. That rosewood board really smooths out some of the spank, but not so muct that you forget you are playing a strat. Since my only strat is a Trower Sig model, I thought this would be a real nice second strat for more of a rock sound. The price was more than fair, and I grabbed this and a set of strap locks and headed for home before I got all anal and started to overanalyze things.
At home, through my system, and after a good setup, I was happy to find that it sounded even better. I plugged it through my little custom amp, which has an EL34 in it at the moment. I also played it through my Boogie and my POD XT. It gets an A plus everywhere. Those frets are humongous, the biggest I have ever had on a strat and I love them! The board is dry, but I will oil it when I change those strings in a couple of days.
What a cool little made in America axe. These things are a great bargain for the money. Just awesome players and the stock electronics seem pretty nice too. I dont think I will change a thing, it's as nice as it needs to be. Well, I will be getting a hard case for it. I just don't care for gigbags at all.
