  • Jim Root Telecaster - Anyone playing one?

I'm really thinking about one of these - has anyone gotten to play one yet? Unfortunately, they come with EMG's, but I can probably live with that. I'm interested in the balance, neck feel and so on...

I'm also thinking about getting one. Floyd rose trems are getting the best of me.

Can't go wrong with two hum teles

or real ones for that matter, you can't beat a bit of twang!

Those wacky Fender dudes...the one Tele has is not flat and has bevels is called a "flathead tele".

Well... So I drive up to the one store in the area that might have one - they carry off-the-wall Fender stuff. They're now closed on Sundays... Dammit.

But here's a "sign of the times" for you -- I walked into Pawn America to see what they had. There were about 20 people there. 18 of them were standing in line to sell stuff. I've NEVER seen that before.

Pulled the trigger on one last night! I really don't have the money for it, but hey - you only go through this life once. I gotta sell my Lynch M1 (and probably my Blue Bengal DK2M...), but I think I'll be okay with that - I'm not really fond of the nut width on the Lynch anyway. But dammit...I really love that guitar.

Bengal - if you're out there, you should hook me up with a REAL signature on it!!

Those look pretty nice. I also like the John 5 Teles.

                Chris,
Send it to me, I'm sure I can get it signed.

They are nice. I still don't have one but I've played a few.

Did you get the kick ass silver tweed case too?

                  Yep!

The guy I got it from has 3 of them. I got it for $649 shipped w/case. He had it on HC and eBay. I really wanted a white one, but he wasn't selling that one, so I'll have the "soon to be shiny" flat black model. We'll see - if I like it enough, I may try to talk him out of his white one. I threw my Lynch Bengal out there as trade bait, but he's not using trem guitars right now. I'm just not a big fan of EMG's though - we'll have to see how that goes.

Have you played any of his FlatHead Teles? Pretty similar? I like the control layout on his sig model better than the standard tele layout anyway. I'm really curious how the neck is gonna be.

If it looks like it's going to be a keeper, I'll definitely find a way to get it to you for Jim's sig - I'll even send a silver pen with!! I'm rocking the StoneSour in my office today! I don't listen to modern rock too often, but SS is one of the few bands that has made the cut. I sold almost all of the other modern rock I had. Pretty much 80's stuff in my collection.

                      Chris,
Yes I've played a few of his flatheads. 12 inch radius is what makes this one a bit different. Should feel more "charvel" like than most teles.

The EMG's are an 81 and a 60. Decent pair. You may dig them, you may not. I like them.

I "helped" him pick mahogany for the body wood. He would tell you that it was his idea but I think I had a voice in that decision. I was working with him when he was specing this one out.

I think you'll dig it. And as long as he's around I wouldn't have a problem getting a real sig on it for you.

Cool beans, Scott! I appreciate the hook-up if we can make it happen. I'm pretty excited about the guitar, and coming from a guy who's had a LOT of guitars, that's saying something.

Fender has a few mahogany tele models, but they're all neck-thrus. Good on you for "helping" him spec this one out. Knowing that he's been using PRS's for a while, I would imagine that's a tone he's gotten used to, and an alder/ash tele might be a bit "bright and happy" for what he does. I'll make due with the EMG's - I'm sure they'll be fine with my Line 6!

Yeah, Bat Boy is pretty creepy. We need pics and a full review of the Tele too!

I was not terribly impressed with the one i played at a local store. Just couldnt "feel" the notes. The strings were relatively new but you would have sworn they were dead.

I'll be sure to do that!

I have yet to be impressed by a store set-up. It's really amazing - I can see a guitar, and say to myself "I GOTTA HAVE IT". I sit down with it, and usually the strings suck, the action is jacked, and the trem is hosed. I hang it up and walk away. Total bummer. I'm pretty good at setting guitars up, and can even get a shitty cheapo to play pretty well. Usually it takes strings and a few pretty basic adjustments.

I really hope I like it - I'm selling my favorite guitar to get it!
