It took FOREVER but it has finally arrived and tomorrow I'll pick it up.
It looks nice. I've heard that the models that people have been getting have been pretty terrible, though, not finished properly, got crappy electronics etc. Hope yours is all okay.
Well I got it home, it came with a leather gigbag embossed with the old style Ibanez logo which I find is a touch of class.
The guitar itself is really light and small and a bit top heavy because of the big headstock, in the shop I already found out that it's not really the rock monster I thought it would be. The pickup is not a high gain pickup and it doesn't sound as thick as a full sized humbucker, nor does it have that ping of a single coil. It took me a while to find a niche in which I can place this guitar but it works perfectly for more fusion/King Crimson style music the pickup really works best when used with Chorus which makes it sound really rich, not unlike an Ovation but without that brittle "Zing" from the Piezo.
I love the neck, it feels like the neck of a Martin Acoustic, I don't know if that's the intention but it does. The small scale makes that i can pull off really difficult chords and the smooth bridge makes for a very easy playing guitar.
However, it is not the rock monster I hoped it would be, so I'm kinda torn between keeping it or selling it on again.
Hmm. What is it made of? Kind of looks like the old Talman series they did that had a funky plastic body. They were pretty cool guitars that played well, but the owner and I agreed they worked best with vintage voiced, lower output pickups. If you've already taken delivery, why not try some different pickups?
You thought the sig model from the guy from Mars Volta would be a rock monster?
They are interesting. I'll give it to Ibanez that they are trying to do something different. Not really my taste but my taste has been accused of sucking.
I just found out why the pickup sounds the way it does. When I took off the pickguard it was revealed that the pickup was connected to the volume pot the wrong way, now that I know that I could wire it the way it should but I'm not sure if I want to do so because I like unusual sound it makes.
Well I went ahead and re-wired the pickup in the way it should be wired and all of a sudden it has twice the amount of output, it snarls and grunts and definetaly has that growl of a humbucker.
Well I'll be, it turns out to be a rock monster afterall.
I love the look of that. What is the scale? Is it short scale?
Folks, this looks like a classic Jag. What's to diss about the look of it? Might as well diss a Tele.
That Ibanez logo brings back memories of those 70s guitars that used to kill everything on the market. Remember the Rocket Roll? What about the Jazz Archtops with that logo? Everyone I knew was dying to get their hands on those Ibanezes. Then Ibanez was sued, they lost, they went back to japan and made new cheaper designs, and everyone lost interest. But for me the name was still magical and I bought one: my first guitar, a Roadstar.
I would consider replacing that pickup if you really like the neck. It looks really nice. Maybe a Lollar would fit well there?
