Custom LP style axes.

I've acquired seven axes and two amps since joining JCF. I don't know if JCF has been a good or a bad influence, but since I'm a glass half full person, I'll go with the former.

I had the good fortune of borrowing my brother's Les Paul custom for a couple of years. Nice chunky heavy piece, but I didn't like the neck. Nor did I like the little skinny frets it had. {He wouldn't let me put on jumbo frets 'cuz he's a purist and likes to leave things as they are. He's also got a nice old Fender Stratocaster.}

So with that in mind, it's obvious that I seek something of a custom LP axe that's ready to go. My searches in JCF has brought me up to speed some, but now I'd like to get the peanut galleries opinions as to what might be a good choice.

Here's my criteria:
- Mahogany body and neck
- single cutaway body style similar to Les Pauls, but not restricted to
- HS w/three tuning keys a side
- one bridge or bridge and neck humbuckers
- rosewood or ebony fingerboard
- Jumbo frets
- thinner neck profile like a BC Rich or an SG
- set neck or neck thru
- 24 3/4 scale

I'm open regarding control layout, finish, binding, inlays, and other cosmetic stuff. Different wood tops are okay. I don't care if it's string thru or stop tail, just no whammy. I prefer suggestions for new guitars with no more than one large in cost. So that pretty much means MIJ or MIK. Not looking for Soloists or any other strat based or shaped axes. No Tele or Firebird styled axes either.

I know that LTD's are much recommended, PRS' and older Ibanez, but in keeping with my suggested criteria, I'd like to know what you guys think.

Stock they're a little more than a grand. I'm not sure how they are but I'm sure someone here has more experience with Carvins.

Your brother has a "fretless wonder". LP Customs had really low frets until 1975.

Go check out a Les Paul Classic. Thin neck similar to a Soloist, medium jumbo frets, and the 496R/500T hot pickup set (somewhere between a Super Distortion and a Duncan Distortion).

Truthfully, I haven't really been following what the old school companies have been up to. Too much into these custom brands I'm afraid.

I had sworn off of LP's until I discovered this model in Dec 2002. Now I have 4 (not all Classics - but all with thin necks).

When Classics first came out in 1990, they sold with a premium over the LP Std. (read: they cost more). In 1993, the Historics came out, and they Classic had some features removed so that it wouldn't compete with the Historics, but were still better than the Std IMO. Then in 2002, the LP Std. was upgraded and the Classic took a back seat.

You should be able to score a plaintop Classic from the 90s in the $1000 - $1200 range on ebay. A Plus or Premium Plus top will cost more. The 1990 - 92 models are the most desirable (the Plus being the most desirable), then the Premium Plus and Plus models (from the older years the better).

As you can see by the pics posted of possible candidates, I'm not too fussy that it looks like a Les Paul. You get the jist.

I remember you posting this a couple of months ago. I'm a fan of animal graphics. Just not a fan of textured finishes though. This is the textured Caiman finish, right? Alligator or whatever.

Where's your IBZ made; Indonesia? China? Just curious 'cuz I see them listed for $399.00 everywhere online. It's important that you like it though and for that, Good on ya'! Good score.

I don't bring it on the road with me but...I could...

I bought it to have another guitar in standard tuning...But I ended up tuning it down because I enjoyed bringing it to jam...The top is scalloped maple...I like it...Gotta be different ya know... I find it gives the guitar a rustic leathery look...
