Oh, yeah, I remember the Custom Lite now, with the chromyte (balsa?). They had them in blue, red and pink. I think they also had black and white versions.

If you wanted to stay under $1000, and were willing/able to do your own finishing work, you could consider a Warmoth Les Paul, as long as you wouldn't mind a bolt-on neck.

Todd (can't remember his user id) had one and he was wondering if he'd regret selling it. I think he might now, because the price has gone up on those the last I checked ebay.

All this talk of $3500 lightweight LP's is getting somewhat off topic. Still though, it's all about LP's and as I previously mentioned; I've been out of the loop with LP's, so everyones rabble babble is just fine with me.

I have mulled over a project axe build, but it wouldn't be an LP. It'd be a custom. Perhaps a V.
Be that as it may, thanks for chiming in with the suggestion, but I'm looking for something complete and ready to abuse!
