  • Help with my homemade jackson/charvel star

Hi! I'm new here. I don't know what to expect from you because i copied one of your guitars but don't worry, i'm just 18 and i don't plan selling it.

I'm building a neckthrough jackson charvel star. It's almost done. I need your opinion about it since you are experts on jacksons and charvels.

    Specs:
Stewmac neckthrough maple neck with ebony headstock and white dots.
    Ash wings.
    Seymour duncan distortion.
1 volume, 1 tone, 1 mini switch to select the south coil or the north or both (humbucker)
    Schaller 3d6 roller bridge.
    Kluson mini lockheads

I want you to help me decide the finish.

looks like you've done a decent job so far.
don't worry about it being thought of as a c.j., though,
there's enough differences to tell it's not.
i vote pearl white or a slime green.

Agreed, quite a few of us have made our own guitars inspired by Jackson/Charvel or have similar specs as them, so as long as you dont advertise it as such, there isn't a problem. Now if you go into production with these, that might be another story.

Great job so far, I'd say considering your age, you have done an amazing job so far. Also I'd like to comment on how clean and sharp the lines are on the body and neck/headstock. I'd say that you're off to a good start, and I hope you keep us posted on the progress you've made with the build up.

Blood splatter would look sweet, especially blood over black, with a matching headstock.

slime green is the best colour imo

If it were me, I'd shoot it in Ferrari Red, with a black headstock, but that's just me.

Looks great so far, and I vote for 'piss yellow' to go for the Holmes vibe....

I'm leaning more to a neon/shocking green...but yeah, pearl white would be nice.

Its my first build. I didnt make the neck. I only shaped the headstock. I'm also happy with the results. I'm not thinking on producing these guitars because it would be time consuming.

Ironicaly i chose this body shape after i played an white charvel star on a shop. The guy didint wanted me to play. He said that the guitar already had an owner and it wasnt a good idea being caught playing on it. But i did. Before the star shape i wanted to do a dean splittail. I really like the pearl white one with black pinstripe.

Blood splatters on black dont work as well as them on white. Blood splatters also have a problem. They turn well as on Dan Jacobs's ESP or they get ugly.

I just had an idea. I'm going to do a drawing...

                    EDIT:

                    What do you think?

                      Nice job man,
I just read your thread over at UG.
I started my first home built back in 92 but i never finished it, it's still wraped in blankets in my closet for 16 years, .
I got to the final shaping and routing and chickened out, well, a little bit, but mostly that i moved and moved, and lack of tools, workspace ect..I did everything hand drawn no templates my own design and with minimal tools as well.
router, hand saw rasps files and a looot of sand paper
Maybe i shall dig it out and take pics, i do have to finish it someday.
i'm actually a little nervous to look, i have no idea if it's been damaged over the years moving all around.
speaking of finish, that was really where i had a dilema, back then no internets, and not a lot of local people doing that kind of work, and that was one part i didn't want to attempt myself.

I would be of no help to you on color choice as i'm just stuck to basic black, if it's exquisitley painted in dragonburst3burstubertripplestep,...then i'm the guy to ask, "can i get that in black?" lol

The only think that i need to do before finishing is sanding smooth.

Slime Green all the way! Anyone who appreciates 80's guitars will love it and everyone else will die from a heart attack when they see it.

Edit: Oh, I just noticed that you're painting it orange. That also should create some shock value. You just need to finish it off with various neon coloured parts like green pickups and pink knobs.
