  • Project #2 - Help me decide on a paint job.

Okay, since it's been so humid around here lately, I haven't been able to work on getting the paint finished on the Explorer as much as I'd like, so I'm gonna start another project as well.

This one is a Peavey Destiny that I got dirt cheap off Ebay some years ago. Part of the headstock was broken off, and the frets were worn down to the fretboard (seriously!). With new frets, and a repaired headstock, she's ready for paint, but I can't decide on a paint job.

You guys get to help me decide. Throw out any ideas you have, no matter how crazy, and I'll pick one. Hell, maybe I'll even make a poll, and let the forum decide.

Some cool ideas so far. Slime green and neon yellow are always cool. The puzzle graphic sound like fun too. I'm certainly willing to do a graphic, or even some actual artwork, as I do actually paint.

Here's what I've been working on lately:

zeegs, with a poplar top like that, i think you should just clear it.

yes, i'm kidding. how about either 1/2 black and white like the old aria ZZs, or white top with black back n' sides like steve stevens?

I had considered filling the singles, regardless of what I decide on for a finish, however, I've filled so many holes in project guitars lately, I feel like Ron Jeremy.

Besides, I could always paint the pickup covers anyway if I decide on a graphic.

One scheme I thought would suit this guitar, would be a warbird type paint job. I'm actually surprised no one suggested it.

By the way, this guitar has been sitting around like this for about 5 years if I remember correctly, and I have NEVER even strung it up. I think I plugged it in for a few minutes the day it arrived, but because of the worn out frets, it played pretty badly and buzzed like hell. The next day, I stripped it, pulled the frets, and that was that.

So what did I do today? I threw the hardware on, installed a no-name pickup I had kicking around, and a volume pot, did a quick set-up, Bob's your Uncle, Fannie's your Aunt, etc, etc.

The fret job is ridiculously good, and even with the anonymous pickup, this things sounds GODLY!! I had forgotten just how good these Kahler Spyders are. It doesn't have quite as much travel as an OFR, but that's due to the routing, and the size of the block. You could easily give it a little more room if you wanted to do a little wood removal. Plus, the thing stays in tune better than an OFR IMO, and generally feels smoother and more solid. Very nice trem, but I HATE the screw in arm. I understand that some of them had push-in arms. The neck is wide, flat, and D shaped. It's not super-slim either, so it's kinda like a Wizard 1 but thicker.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. Let's hear some more finish ideas.

LOL, yeah the poplar is pretty bad isn't it?

I like the black/white ideas, but I really want to do something a little more complex this time around.
