  • Lado Deluxe

These are another Canajun handmade axe, one which I actually sold a bunch of back in the 80-90s.
This one's a bolt-on shredder but they made all kinds of stuff, neckthroughs, laminated exotic woods, etc.
I picked up this lost soul today
I cound not help myself from just ripping it apart for an immediate first-aid cleanup.
Not sure what the plan will be for the finish but it's had the same fate as some of the Bolt Swans.
Purple is not really my thing but in turn I don't have any purple guitars so we'll see. Either way...my first Lado nonetheless.
Anyways, amazingly thin neck and some of you will recognize the Schaller hardware and pickups. They were screamers and this one will likely not disapoint

Here she is all cleaned up and ready to rock.
A couple of things about these that is very distinctive.
The Canadian built Lado were all custom built like the San Dimas or Robin guitars of the day and in limited numbers.
They really sound like nothing else...an amazing harmonic tone that is full of colourful resonance and sustain.
The necks are very very thin and fast.
The purple is a flipflop that goes from plum crazy purple to lazer blue...

That's quite a bit of lacquer checking there! One of my Lados is like that too, but fortunately it's not as visible on mine due to the trans finish. My other Lado has no checking, but still has paint issues. It's a Lado flying V from the late 70s or early 80s, and the paint feels sticky and grimy. Whenever I play it, I can feel little bits rolling off the back of the neck onto my hand.

I called Joe Kovacic a few weeks ago, and he said for $600 CDN he would refinish the guitar in a new polyester finish, level & crown the frets, and basically give the guitar a complete overhaul. Seems like a pretty good deal to me. I just wish I had $600 to spare.
