  • OLP Petrucci

I've got a line on an OLP Petrucci guitar for $100 with the case. Good deal? Haven't seen any pics yet, but he says the only thing wrong is a missing knob from the pickup selector.

olp's usually dont go for much but my older brother has one and it's a very playable guitar...havent picked up a petrucci yet but have seriously given it some thought...i'd say go for it...if you dont like it you can most likely easily get your money back out of it...chances are you might like it tho...d.m.

I've got one. Great neck, decent paint, crappy parts/pickups/workmanship, etc. $100 isn't bad if it is good shape. New they were around $300. I got mine for $200 on closeout at Guitar Center.

I had a terrible experience with OLPs. I bought a 5-string Music Man copy on sale for half price. The thing had a neck about as stable as a piece of cheese. Living where I am and the fact I hate messing with truss rods I just couldn't deal with the thing. It sounded mediocre but when the neck wasn't shaped like a bow and arrow it was actually nice playing. Luckily I sold it to a different store for more than I bought it for.

All I can say is try before you buy and go over it thoroughly.

Yeah it's local so I'm definitely checking it out before handing over cash.

Those of you who have had OLPs, what would you compare the quality level to, excluding the replaceable bits (electronics, pickups)?

Well, I went for it, since for $100 with the hard/soft case (feels like a gig bag with a plastic insert) I could afford to be curious.

I have to say that I'm impressed. With the exception of the super crappo tuners that go out of tune with any movement of the trem and with any bend over 2 steps, it's a very well-built guitar. Sounds great unplugged; plugged in it has very high output...the neck pickup can get a bit muddy. I took a peek inside the electronics cavity and everything is wired very cleanly and solidly. Insanely easy access to the 24th fret.

All-in-all, with a few small upgrades (new tuners or maybe a locking nut, upgraded pickups) this is a great guitar for the money. It will take some time getting used to the super narrow neck though. How small are Petrucci's hands???
