  • Project guitar: Vinnie Vincent V

Being a child of the 80's, there were two guitar players I saw on MTV who inspired me to pick up the instrument. The first was Carlos Cavazo (Quiet Riot)... the second? Vinnie Vincent. I remember seeing the Boyz Are Gonna Rock video and I fell in love with that double V he was playing. I always hated the end of the video where he destroyed the guitar!

After doing a little research recently, I learned there are hardly any of these guitars out there (like... 28 of them?!?) and when they come up for sale, they go for more than I'm willing to spend. So I found a luthier and we're creating one. After 20 years of playing and collecting Charvels, Jacksons, and Ibanez RG's, I decided to build a Vinnie Vincent-style V. The project is just getting under way, but I thought it'd be fun to share it with other Jackson enthusiasts. And if you have any ideas, tips, or what-not... feel free to chime in.

I have to thank this forum, as I found some hi-res pictures of an original VV from which this body was fashioned. Taking measurements from the pictures, we drew the body in 3D in AutoCAD and that drawing was then used by a CNC machine to cut the body from a solid piece of alder. I just got pics of it yesterday afternoon. Here it is...

Since most of the VV's I've found pics/vids of were solid colors, I'm thinking about doing a metallic blue for the main color and the shadow/second V in a metallic silver. I was also thinking of having a good friend of mine (an amazing artist) do a custom paint-job on it. I really have no clue what I'd do in the way of a custom/art paint job, so I'm leaning towards a loud metallic blue color.

I picked up a full set of original Jackson chrome hardware from the 'Bay for a steal.

I just purchased an EMG 89 for it. I realize this is supposed to be a face-melting shredder type of guitar, but I thought it would be cool to have the option to switch between single and double coil pickup settings. Not that I plan to play a whole lot of blues jams with this guitar!

I also still need a Jackson guitar neck for the project, so if you have one you'd like to part with, please email me and we'll talk about price. I'm going to post a want-ad in the classified section here and I'm currently perousing EvilBay for a neck. Preferably one with shark-fin inlays. My wife thinks the guitar needs a reverse headstock, so I'll consider it a big bonus if I come across a guitar neck with a reverse headstock and shark fins.

Anyway... that's all for now. I'll update as we move along...

At the end of that video he shoves a RR into the speaker not his VVV.

I dont know if you know this but there is a new rule on this forum. Everytime there is a VV thread we have to post a disclaimer so people dont bother Vinnie Vincent at his home address with questions about his gear. We have had "problems" with certain people just showing up at VV's house in the past.

      Great guitar by the way.

Cool project! Isn't that neck route for an IBZ AANJ type neck though?

Oh boy, here we go! Bluestreak- looks really good, the lions claw trem cavity is a nice touch. A reverse headstock is a good call too!

My apologies for violating the rules with my first post! Then here's my disclaimer! This guitar is only a replica! Ain't got nothin' to do with Vinnie except he created the shape 20+ years ago. I've only owned more conventionally shaped guitars... never a V. I figured if I was gonna do a V, I'd do one not many people have ever seen.

Thanks, man! It's one of the last of my childhood desires about to come true!

I talked to the luthier and made it clear it was to be routed for a Jackson neck. I was surprised when I saw the body that it had the neck pocket routed already; I thought he'd wait until I delivered the neck. I dunno... he's the expert, not me.

Actually, the guy who cut the body added that himself, without telling me, knowing I was an Ibanez fan, too. I was pleasantly surprised to see it when he sent me the pictures. I thought it was a nice tip 'o the hat to one of my favorite guitarists.

Well...I guess the IBZ neck that you pick out for it will match that lion's claw!

Hmmm... I don't get it. The pics on the ebay listing are of the same body as your guitar. Is this guy selling your body. The grain matches exactly.
