  • Pulled the trigger on an Epiphone Firebird carcass.

Not the actual guitar but it looks just like it.

A few weeks ago I got this call from a lutheir who I befreinded if I could help him out with his newest project. One of his customers came in with an Epiphone Firebird which he wanted to have a copy made which used top notch materials and proper Firebird contstruction and details. He knew of my Thunderbird bass built and asked if he could borrow my routing template for that.

But to keep costs low the customer specified that that luthier would use all the hardware of the bird. Last week I walked into the workshop and Nick (the luthier) told me that the customer said that he should pick his epiphone clean and then toss the remains in the dumpster, knowing that I'm always at the lookout for cool project guitars he contacted me about buying the carcass off of him, we agreed on a price of 25 bucks. The guitar's body is made from plywood but it DOES have a set neck and it oozes Mojo. So I'm pretty excited about it.

Here it is, as you can tell I already performed some work on her, all she needs now are pickups, and I'm planning to fit the zebra Humbuckers which were in my Eastwood. (That's right, my Eastwood has P90's again)

Neat. If the body is plywood, what's the neck made out of?

I don't think it's actually plywood, I can't remember the term, but it's flat pieces glued together and cut as one solid piece, where isn't plywood just a boat load of random wood chunks pressed together?

I bet once he gets good pickups in that thing it'll sound great. 25 bucks will probably end up a steal for that guitar.
In the future though I need to remember to not buy guitars while on Nyquil

Ah, could be. I didn't think Epiphone actually used plywood, but wasn't sure.

I'm planning to re-finish the guitar in sonic blue.

That's one of those colors I really love, but only on Firebirds and Strats.

It still needs a couple of layers of blue and a couple of layers of clear coat but due to a mishap with the masking tape I had to remove it and put the parts on it to make a picture of how it will look when finished.
