  • The longest lasting double locker

I use my whammy bar probably 75% of the time I play. Because of this.. I have worn out a Floyd on my Washburn N2 and a set of posts and my 1st year RG550 is now showing signs of age. the trem isn't returning to zero without a nice flick of the bar. That is the telltale sign for me that the knife edge of the trem is wearing out and usually the posts are pretty bad too. I am an extremely heady bar user. I'm not really a dive bomber but I use it to accent notes in just about every song my band does.
I am probably going to have to make a move into some new double locking trem equipt guitars. Keep in mind.. I have owned just about everything. The trem needs to be a full floater. I was thinking I might have to bite the bullet and go with a trans trem Steinberger.
What do you guys suggest I look at. I need a very smooth full floating system that can handle the rigors of constant use.
How are those Floyd Discovery guitars with the blank headstock?

The Gotoh FR are supposed to be very good. I have one on my custom Kelly but can't really comment since I am not a heavy FR user. Suhr have started using them I believe, which means Reb Beach would be using and abusing his?

I've had Stienbergers and the trans trem has it faults, pretty sturdy but when you wear one out where are you going to get parts?

What about one of those Ibanez with the ball bearing trem - the Z or Zero Edge or something like that - I've heard good things about those.

Yep, I think it's the S-series Ibanez that have the Zero Edge trem. Nothing to wear out on those.

Is it possible to just sharpen the edges and posts of the one you have? I'm sure you'd get at least another couple of years out of it.

Kahler's take a long time to wear out.
The only TT you can get now is the one on the ZT 3. It's nice, but don't know how long it will last. They are really new.

Ibanez still sells spare parts for edge trem. New posts and knife edges are quite cheap.

Been dishing out major abuse to my 1986 Ibanez Edge trem for 23 years, and I have yet to hurt it.

                They are not cheap.

But when you consider how long they last, they are a good value.

I would rate the old Floyd Rose (Like what you would get on an old Kramer from the '80's) as next, followed by the Gotoh currently on the market.

Schaller is in there as well, prolly tied with the Gotoh.

Just my opinion, so grain of salt on the knife edges may be req.

And as far as I know Bigsby's never wear out.

I would add that a bit of lube prevents metal-on-metal wear.
I like Quantum Hot Sauce, a fishing reel lube with Teflon.

You can get it cheaper, but this is the stuff.
                    Great for nuts too.

                    (should your nuts require lubrication)

Usually depends on how tight the vise is set a work.

i had an original schaller on a guitar for 12 years...beat the ever living shit out of it (anyone who saw me play live can attest to that) and it never gave me issue one...these days i am using a schaller jackson trem with no issues and an ibanez edge that was made in 92 and still holds up well...d.m.

my ibanez trems have held for years, as have the OFRs i have used. i moderly abuse the trem, lots of pull-ups and full depresses, flickers, etc. those trems have worked fine for me.

If you could get the Schaller with titanium knife edges and titanium studs, I think that would be heaven.

They've made the block and saddles from titanium, we just need a special baseplate and studs.
