  • Explorer project update - FINALLY!!!!

I know a lot of you guys were interested in this, so I figured it was time to get this thing finished.

Here's the original thread, with most of the work detailed.

I was at the point where I needed to put a logo on the headstock. I designed the logo I wanted, and someone suggested I get a vinyl mask made up so that I could paint the logo on easily. So, I just happen to know a guy who works at a sign maker, and he made me up these really cool little vinyl masks, and also some matching vinyl decals. The decals were his idea, and they came in really handy.

So, the first thing I tried, was applying the vinyl mask, and painting the logo that way. Well, unfortunately, when I tried to remove the mask afterwards, it tore the edges of the paint up pretty bad, and the logo looked like shit. Not good. So, I sanded the failed attempt off, and tried to figure out what to do next. Well, that was a few months ago, and I finally decided to get back to work on it.

I had thought of using one of the decals instead, but I figured it would look stupid in yellow. I would have asked for them in white, but since I never knew he was making them in the first place, and they were free, I can't really complain. So, I used one anyway. Here is the headstock now.

Here, it has one coat of clear over it. It will take many, many coats, before I can sand it flat, but I think it's going to turn out pretty well. I'll be doing many coats of clear in the next few days on the entire guitar, and then the fun part, wet sanding!!!

Now I have to get a router base for my Dremel, so I can take care of the fingerboard inlays.
    Sleep!!, That's where I'm a viking!!

Hey it looks like the Gibson logo once the lacquer yellows. Not bad at all.

Hey, that would have been cool, but it's too late now. I have 3 coats of clear over it now.

You've got that right, here's the one I built last year.

I have since equipped it with a Washburn double locking trem but it's not really that good so I might give it a Kahler as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

Sorry to hi-jack this thread Zeegler, you did a stellar job on your guitar.

                      NICE!

Where did you get the colored pickups? Were they custom made?

The pickup are Seymour Duncans and the colored pickup rings I made out of 3mm thick blue acrylic.

Those are great explorers guys! Love the cobra themed Explorscarab. I think that mod to the back really sets it apart. I'll take mine in blue with white stripes please!
