  • Played a Dave Murray strat today...

Well, I was wondering around the city (NYC) today and stopped at the GC on 14th St. They had the Dave Murray strat up on the wall so I had to check it out.

I am completely not GASsing for this guitar any more.

Overall, it needed a setup (string height was really high) and the pickups (while historically accurate, I guess) are not F-spaced, so the strings completely miss the poles on the E's. It was light overall, I'm guessing low 7 lbs, so I thought it would really resonate, but it felt pretty lifeless to me (this can vary from guitar to guitar, so maybe there's some better ones out there).

The neck was nicely finished, and the frets were polished OK - the back of the neck had a satin finish - like a gloss nitro that had been rubbed down with some steel wool. I didn't like the chunky feel - it was like a deep U - more like an early tele than a late 50's strat - I was expecting a V shape from a 50's build. It didn't feel comfortable - especially compared to my San Dimas Style 1 that I've been playing like crazy. The fretboard edges were not rolled (no skunk stripe - so its a two-piece as well). It just really didn't sing under high gain with either pickup.

The rings on the humbuckers were also cheap plastic looking jobs - they weren't screwed in, which also seemed odd to me, but maybe that's the way they were supposed to be. Dave's sig on the back of the headstock was kind of blurry black magic marker looking.

In comparison to other sig models like the Eric Johnson, the YJM and the Blackmore strat that I've spent time with recently, the Murray strat ranks last.

Well, the good news is that I don't feel that I NEED this guitar any longer. Hopefully the Adrian Smith Jackson is head and shoulders above this thing.

Anyway, just my opinion after a couple minutes with one, YMMV.

    Thanks for the review.
I've really been looking forward to checking one of these out. Still am actually. Fender has been hit or miss for years now but there's always good out there. The challange is to find them.

I still can't believe that Fender is charging $2,000.00 for the Dave Murray strat. How many of these guitars do they think will sell for that price?

It was marked at like 1599... so its a bit less than $2k

Dealer cost is somewhere between $1000 - $1200, probably closer to $1200 so $1599 comes out to be the street price.

A lot cheaper than the 8K Gibson wants for the Johnny Winter sig Firebird.
I was waiting and waiting for that one but when i saw the 12K MSRP i knew my ship was sunk.

Well every price that I've seen from dealers online is $2020.00.

Well maybe, but that's likely to be the Minimum Advertised Price not street price...

I'm going to disagree about the guitar.
I have one and I love it so far. You are right about the F spacing, but mine sings out well.
Very light and the neck has a slight v (very slight). Non-rolled edges are correct spec for the neck though.
It's not a Charvel by along shot, but a really good Fender fat strat. Very light weight and great fit and finish.
The only complaint I have had so far is the 3 way switch.I would have rather it be a 5 way.

I have 2 Artist Strats and picked both up for their feature set. The Mark Knopfler for the 57 body and the 62 neck, All AVRI parts. and this one for the light weight body and the 57 AVRI neck.

I didn't pay 2k either. So don't go by the MAP prices.
So far I like it really well.

@ Flatpicker - glad to hear you got a good one. That's why I always say you've got to play every guitar - and make them take the other ones out of the storeroom - keep at it until you get THE ONE.

i like the idea of this guitar.but i never wanted a sig model and i still dont.
i just had the same idea as dave. a strat with 2 hums in it.but i didnt realize it doesn't even come with a floyd. its gotta have a floyd!
i will eventually find the right strat and modify it. hopefully all i have to do is swap the neck pickup for a hum.
stop at full speed at 100 miles per hour. the colgate invisible shield finally got em.

So what did you think of the new Blackmore? Of all the new artist models from FMIC, this is the one that most intrigues me. Is the progressive scalloping on the Blackmore pretty well done? I have a Japanese model from '97 and it's a decent guitar though the scalloping is only about so-so in quality.

I gotta find a new Blackmore to try out...

The Blackmore I played was new - the scalloping was impeccable - very nicely done - very smooth. Played like butter. I also really dug the recessed strap locks - a very cool detail. Sounded very beefy - it had the Duncan Quarter Pounders in the neck and bridge.

I have always been a humbucker guy. I never considered a strat in my life. If someone gave me one for free i would have hit them over the head with it. I never got it. Last few months i been really lovin the single coil sound on my model 6. Today I played one of these fuckers and fell in love.

Its called highway one edition. Its a tranlucent wine color. The thing was incredible. And now i have to have one.

                              they make a highway one tele, called a baja i think, with a 12" neck radius, which is very rare for a tele, i'm jonesing for {most teles have a 9.5" or a 7.5" which is too round for me, the flatter the better.}
